Usually it's the picture that comes closest to the judge's choice of topic, and is also a fine picture that wins. But if the competition were to be judged purely on photographic merit what if Mattox had decided the most competent entry was, say, of the kitten? That was hardly human suffering. Its a fine line and I wonder where it should be drawn?

I agree David - it should be the best photo on theme that should ideally win (though of course opinions will generally differ on which meets these criteria best). In this case a picture of a cat would have been inappropriate, but not necessarily one of a sulky child! Though of course the decision is up to the judge.Usually it's the picture that comes closest to the judge's choice of topic, and is also a fine picture that wins. That's quite ok - but life is too short - get out there with a camera and do it - rather than spend your life talking about it and what might have been. It's done - move on

You think I spend all my time on here blogging and not out there taking pictures? You'll find far more of my pictures in my portfolio and in the competitions than you seem to have.

Besides taking this discussion to a personal level or p*ss*ng contest
It only takes roughly 1/60 sec to take 1 picture a day. Which leaves another 86399 seconds to do other fun stuff, like participating in threads.

As we have discussed at length, suffering is a very subjective thing - and according to the OED it can mean the action of permitting someone to do something ( suffer the little children................)
Let`s get back to our hobby
