While I'm here its worth mentioning my recent purchase - yep you guessed it an AF360. I know its been said here before but this is a bloody fantastic piece of kit. I have been planning to buy since autumn last year and now I have it I wish I had taken the plunge sooner. If you are thinking about one just buy it!
I love the wireless mode, the hi speed sync, the modeling test flash and... well its all just brilliant!! I can't fault it and ive been 'playing' with it heavily in the last week to learn how it works and what to expect out of it and its still on the first set of 2000mAh ni-mh batteries.
Its a real compliment to my *istD (ok I know it should be) but my expectations have well been exceeded.

Just thought I would share...

Hi Rob,

congratulations, the AF 360 really is great. I have some difficulty, though, getting the high speed sync to work. Two weeks ago I did some indoor shots (and some outside that needed some flash support). I usually shoot selecting the aperture and let the camera decide the speed. Whenever I used the flash it would set the speed to 1/60 or 1/45 s. Indoors that wasn't a big deal but the outdoor shots were overexposed, since 1/60 was too slow on a sunny day. I didn't have much time to play around thoroughly with the settings, the little things I did were in vain.

Any ideas?

You need to set HS mode on the camera by pressing the same button (lightning bolt symbol to the side, redeye symbol on top) that sets it into Wireless mode. Just press it one more time then you can set whatever shutter speed you desire. The AF360FGZ will HS Synch up to 1/6000th of a second, way faster than the D.

A correction to my previous post.

Actually, all you need to do is set the flash to P-TTL Mode, move the synch switch to HS, then you can select any shutter speed. The method I described previously is for Wireless HS Synch.

Remember that HS Synch does not work in all exposure modes. It doesn't work in 'Green' programmed AE or 'B'ulb modes. Also, the shutter speed must be set to > 1/150th. Check your istD manual page 95 for instructions on how to use the AF360FGZ and the *istD in HS Synch mode.

Have not used this feature for a while but, I belive the idea of the high speed flash setting is to be able to use flash above the normal 1/150th sec. a la fill in on sunny days. Does considerably reduce the distnce you can be away from the subject though.

Jason stands to be corrected, but feels confident.
