I wouldn't be so concerned about payment, Kris. If educational publishers were anything like academic ones (well certainly those publishing on Africa, with which I have experience) then they're budget will be extremely tight. Perhaps you should make enquiries first, though, to see if there's a possibility of payment. Other than that I'd be happy with the credit and the free book - and of couse your contribution to Danish education!

Thereafter, should you be satisfied that it is solely for education purposes, the choice is yours...

They can give you a credit by the picture they just don't want to although I guess a credit at the back is something (make it a long book surely?). Tell them to go whistle if they won't even do that and that would make me wonder about the whole project. So, as the others say check their bona fides.

I have had two requests for the use of my photographs in the past. I gave my permission to use them free of charge in both cases. I received a copy of the book in one case and the other I attended the launch and was able to photograph Dr David Jenkins a former Bishop of Durham. LINK.
I have had no regrets not asking for payment in either case.
One of biggest thrills I have had was last summer when my youngest grand son's teacher gave me a card and a small gift at the end of term for photographs I had supplied during the term.
There again I am a simple person who is easily pleased.

Provided it's all legitimate, it really comes down to whether you're happy receiving a copy of the book as payment. Personally I would, though I might ask them to make a small donation to a charity of my choice as well.
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

A few years back I had a request from AVA to publish one of my photos that is on ePz (link) in a Photography book being written by David Prakel. No payment was offered (and he was using lots of photos from many different people). Having satisfied myself on authenticity of request and proposed useage of photo etc, I was happy for the photo to be used. The credits went with the photo.
I received 3 copies of the book

They can use some of my pics if they want. Totally irrelevant, of course, but I'm cheap. A free book suits me fine, and gives me considerable bragging rights over the Canikon blokes at work.

It doesn't bode well for people trying to make a living out of photography. I wonder whether the authors of the text are also giving it for free.
I would seek payment and credit, otherwise our chosen hobby/profession is being devalued.

It is very normal in text books for the photo credits to be listed together on one page - have a look at almost any guide book for instance.
Let's face it the market for Danish textbooks is tiny so it doesn't surprise me that they can't pay you.
It is probably worth having a contract drawn up which limits the use of the photo only to the Danish version - if they translate the book then payment must be made or the photo deleted.
check out that it is a Bone fide publisher. Only you know if you are happy to give a photo to them for free.

As others have said check out the validity of the request first, is the author doing this for free? are the printers producing the book at cost etc etc, if someone somewhere is making money then why cant you?

I am a naturally suspicious person so I would be slightly aprehensive of the request. Are we talking about a not-for-profit organisation creating textbooks or one that is planning to publish and make profits from the book?
Having said that, I can see the argument that the Danish textbooks market may be very limited and therefore I imagine they would try and reduce the number of contributors they compensate.
I think Gwyn's suggestion is a good one - i.e. to confirm that this would only be for the Danish language version.
But all that aside, congratulations! Someone has seen your work and would like to publish it.

You will get a book and the nice, warm feeling that you are contributing to the education of some Danish kiddies. Being in the business of teaching yourself, you know that's a good thing.
As long as it's all above board and the image won't be used in any other way, go for it. - It might even lead to other requests for pictures from other publishers, who can pay.

I think a agree with mowog, but it would nark me to think someone was making money out of something given for free.

He might not be losing any income letting them use the images, but a pro photographer somewhere is losing the income he needs to make a living. I am in the process of preparing a publication of a textbook for educational purposes in Denmark. It is a theme book about Outlaws for school kids in 5th and 6th grade. The book will be called Outlaws and will be part of our series of theme books Fact Finder. It will be ready for publication in the fall of 2010 and will be printed in about 2000 copies.
I would like to ask your permission to use your picture: "Tamron 70-300 at 133mm" (of Markyate Cell, home of Katherine Ferrers in the 18th century) in all print-runs of this book. Our budget is tight, so I can't offer you any form of payment and we cannot print your credit on the picture, but you will of course be credited in the book, and will receive a free copy of the book.
