The long hunt paid off nicely - were these on the Malverns?
The first one I saw was when our children were younger, we went for a good long walk across the hills and I turned round to see my middle daughter scuffing her feet along the grass then kicking what we thought was an old bike tyre. It was only when we saw it scurry off into the undergrowth that we realised what had happened! Bit of a close shave

Lovely images, and well done on keeping your distance with them, there has been a lot of problems with 'photographers' (i.e.e people with cameras) getting too close and harassing them at this vital time of year whenh they need to bask to get into breeding condition.

Excellent Chris, I've never seen one in the wild, but we do have lots of Grass Snakes living around our house, although these too are extremely timid and not at all easy to photograph.

Nice shots. I walk our dogs every day on Horsell Common in Surrey which has a big (reputedly) Adder population. In the last 3.5 years I have only ever seen two. One was a baby at 5 inches long, but one was a good 2 footer. Luckily on both occasions I noticed them before the dogs could investigate.

They were approx 2ft and 18" long respectively and fairly timid, just moving the monopod an inch or 2 made enough of a vibration on the ground for them to go into hiding in the undergrowth, but 5 mins later, they were both out again.
