Excellent effect, may be me, I cant quite work out if you've dropped the nail varnish in to the tank or placed it and its leaked out ?

The contrasting colours are superb against the black BG and the quick burst of flash has caught the movement superbly.

Interesting shot, it's really bang on.
I'd love to know how you got it to billow out like that,
It's one very cool shot.

Thanks all!

The knack! Cotton sewing string is tied under the lid and then both ends tied together to form a loop over the lid so it then suspends in the water in a set place not moving. It's not a floater but a sinker so the weight of the bottle keeps the cotton taught.

The liquid is a colour matched acrylic paint that's been bonded warehouse the water to make it more liquidy when squirted via a syringe

A great effect! It was interesting to see the equipment set-up, but I couldn't relate it to the actual image at all ....not even sure If I get it after your explanation either I was surprised to see the flashes pointed bare straight at the glass ....I thought that might create all sorts of distracting glare or flare, but no, it looks very clear. Great work !

The flashes have to be absolutely parallel to the glass to avoid flare etc. I positioned them slightly in front of the subject also so the light wrapped around the front of the nail varnish bottle and also to aid spill control on the backdrop, although the flash heads were zoomed slightly to make the light slightly tighter.

What bit of the right up didn't you get?
Better with this image?

I'm afraid none of it .... I am just not understanding what I'm seeing ....is it the nail varnish coming out slowly? It looks like the bottle is closed, but is it a little bit open? I'm thinking now that its actually all very slow, but the capture makes it look like a sudden splash of action.

Nigel, Gareth has explained that the liquid is acrylic paint injected into the water, to look like the nail varnish. You cannot imagine Mrs Gareth letting a whole bottle of nail varnish be 'wasted'! I bet she was out at the time. Or is it Gareth's?
