actuations.

Far in excess of what anyone is likely to shoot except under the most rigorous professional use.
The shutters are usually rated for 100,000 to 150,000 cycles, after which they may need repair/replacement. That's not the end of the camera though. All mechanisms, such as mirror, aperture control, etc., may need attention at some point.
Looked after properly and not abused, our modern DSLRs will probably be upgraded long before they fail.

I think I might have one of teh most-used K10Ds out there. I'm rapidly heading towards 60k actuations with only minimal issues (paint fading on "OK" button, fourway switch is not always 100%, but will be replaced shortly).
I'll probably get it cleaned and adjusted and pixelmapped in the not-too-distant future, when I have another body to use while it's away.

How long is a piece of string?
Why are so many people SOOO hung up on actuations? no point at all.

it was an experimental drive by night shooting in town so I certainly wasn't worried about actuations And never am.

Because it gives an indication of use. I would prefer to buy second hand if the camera has done fewer actuations. Whilst a shutter can fail at any point and this can be replaced, it is still worth knowing IMHO.How long is a piece of string?

That's a shocking admission - worse than using a mobile phone!

My main reason for asking the question is that Im starting to regret trading my k10 as part payment for my new kr. I may look to buy a 2nd hand model at some point but would like to know how long it may be good for after use by the former owner. Thanks for the feed back guys I found your answers very helpful. How long is a piece of string?
