We've got the same weather and I must admit I wouldn't want to be biking in it today...

Luckily we don't have the same weather here! Frustrating for all you bikers though.
Eldest son had a bike lesson this morning. He has to wait until the end of March to take part one of his test though, and hopefully part two just after. Of course his sailing season then starts so I'm not sure how much time he'll have to practice once he's passed.
A motorcycling son is every mother's nightmare. I thought he's got over it when he got a car and gave up his Kreidler brommer, but it seems it's in his blood. Luckily I don't have to lie awake waiting to hear his brommer turn in the street nowadays, his wife can worry about the bike!

Well at least that's proper snow - I find ever more depressing how people are challenged by the slightest foul weather. My daughter's bus in Nottingham dumped all its passengers as they 'couldn't carry on' but oddly managed to get back to the depot - empty. Taxis weren't picking up.
I took two hours to do a 45 minute trip because of a tiny snow fall late last year. Every muppet in the world was out at 10 miles per hour. It's snowing get on with it!
I truly am a grumpy old man. I don't want to be though!

Tis true though Mike!
We aren't set up for this level of snow because we don't get it often, unlike the scandinavian countries who had had lots of practice.
But, why do people have to over react?
I was behind a guy doing 20mph on a gritted road this morning. Why do I always get behind them when I'm late for work

I was 17 when I passed my bike test and 31 when I was blackmailed by my employer into passing my car test. I spent two winters riding 12 miles each way to work on a old Ducati 900ss on compacted snow.
Whats the problem
Love the photo and the idea behind it though.

I'm surprised nobody asked about technical aspects.
This shot was done outa boredom, but the self assignment was to use studio lights in a project that didn't look too...well obviously studio. Getting three diferent lightsources to co-operate was a challenge.
there was the motorcycle lights at iso 100, f4, 1/8 s
there was the outside light bright sun and snow iso 100, f11, 1/125s
then the studio strobes iso 100, f11, 1/160 s for the main (4 foot softbox off to left), f8.5 for the other two....
the contrast range between the dark interior of the garage and the bright sun and snow was wayy to much to record in one shot...without flash)
one shot for motorcycle lights
one shot for outside snow (lightstands and umbrellas removed from frame)
one shot for motorcycle and myself
tripod mounted camera.
pseudo hdr in pse layers simply erased.
so since nobody asked, I'm guessing the use of studio strobes wasn't too obvious?
with a serious subject, I may work a little harder but this was slapped together in under an hour, setup to publishing on the web....

Snow is only a problem, because there is no money in the pot to grit the side roads and the pavements.Well at least that's proper snow - I find ever more depressing how people are challenged by the slightest foul weather. Unlike years gone by, when the local council men used to go down the side roads flinging rock salt onto the roads and pavements, now only the Major roads, and Motorways get any gritting!
The rest of us are left to struggle out of our properties, and try to get down the treacherous side roads as best we can without slamming into all the parked cars and vans that are left in all the side roads!
As heavy snow is a rare thing in this country, local authorities, will not not buy in large quantities of rock salt, are loath to pay the gritting men overtime to grit at night, or have a snow plough standing about that may never get used, for 18 years, the result when we get freak weather, we are unable to cope!

What you need is some decent tyres on your vehicles!
I used dubbed tyres for many years, guess they are prohibited in Britain. But the last three winters I have used what we call dub-free winter tyres (soft rubber, lots of slices), and I have no problems on icy or snowy roads.

2 inches of snow and London grinds to a halt! Its a joke. All trains and buses were running here. I just put the snow chains on the car,off I went and removed them when I reached a clear road which wasn't very far.
We live on the north west edge of Europe where it snows in winter but this somehow takes the whole of England by surprise. To an extent the BBC, IMO, should shoulder some of the blame with its scaremongering news coverage, same goes for their coverage of the credit crisis.
BBC correspondents were at the side of motorways all over the country this morning to report that all roads were clear and the traffic was light because people had been forced to stay at home because hundreds of schools were closed.
Roscoe, Glasgow City Council has many faults but the roads were all extensively gritted before the snowfall, the pavements were clear too and you can get free salt/grit for your own driveways and paths.
MikeW, I couldn't agree more.

the great thing about snow is this:
If you ignore it long enough, it will go away.

Pavements gritted? Never been seen in years mate, side roads? Forget it,
Free salt/Grit?I've had to buy my own at a silly price from B&Q, you don't know how lucky you are then!
If severe weather only happens rarely, then local council heads just get buried!
