I don't think you would get much better image quality from a newer 50mm as the old Ricoh / Pentax (and many other makes) lenses are excellent when it comes to IQ.

I presume you have overcome the problem pin that can on occasion cause old Ricoh lenses to get stuck on Pentax mounts? If you've tried it and all is well, so be it. My first camera, I bought in 1985, was a Ricoh KR-5. The 50mm Rikenon lens on it wasn't that brilliant to be honest. I stil have the camera and lens
My Pentax A 50/1.7 is much much better
Based upon that I would say you'll be able to improve upon the Rikenon easily

I was always very fond of my Rikenon 50mm f2 (PK mount without the pin, c1985) and only replaced it with the FA50 f1.4 when Jesssops had them at half price for a short period earlier this year.
The sharpness of both is impressive but the Pentax has the obvious added convenience of A-mode and autofocus.

It does have a very small rounded pin but it goes on and off easily, and the other reason was the -mode and autofocus but as I don't use it that much I'll try it for a while and see what happens. Thanks for the feedback all.
