I'm surprised that the DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL II didn't rank higher, it isn't even on the list! Or did you include this in the WR version?

It's an interesting list and the kind of thing I would compile on the very rare occasion I have time on my hands.

But I'm shocked anyone would use the list to base their lens purchase(s) on.

You only did it with those two, the DA*55 and the FA50 for example are also used for the same type of photo's but you grouped them not together but like you said it's all just for fun. =]

But i'm quite curious if you've the number separately to see how where they end up when alone.

Statistics are a dreadful thing. Looking at this in an holistic way, I find it very hard to believe that the most used lens is a 100mm macro. Or that the runners up are probably the most expensive options available.

If you extrapolated this to cover all Pentax users then Pentax would be selling as many 100mm macro lenses as camera bodies and I think that's highly unlikely. Looking at the images people post even just here in the forums and Gallery it's also highly unlikely.

Anyone buying a lens because of such statistics isn't really looking at photography logically IMHO.

Yes the way the statistics have been processed creates a false impression. I doubt anyone would have put the 100mm macro in first place, but it looks like most people had it high up in their top 5. I think everyone put a wide or normal zoom in first place, but there are so many options available.

It's a good yardstick of lens popularity though.

I would wonder if the 100mm came out so well because of all those cheap ones which popped up in PC World/Comet/etc a while ago? I bet many people who wouldn't have otherwise bought a macro lens were tempted and found the lens absolutely incredible for the money!

Exactly what happened in my case. And there is the bonus of it being an amazing portrait or headshot lens.

Statisitcs are statistics and we all know they can be made, or interpreted, to represent almost any valid point of view. The survey was interesting in that it wasn't about what is your favourite lense, or which lense do you own that gives the best pictures IYO, but which do you use the most.

Obviously we don't have definitive numbers for actual shots taken so in that respect the results cold be skewed, and as I said the number of participants is very low for a survey of this type, but it's fun to see what people are using and fun to see how it all worked out in the end. Think some people need to lighten up a little, I'm certain Pentax are not ramping up production of the 100mm based on this

I'm now running the survey on PF so it will be interesting to see how that one works out and which lenses emerge as leaders from the two or more sites (if I put it up anywhere else) combined. Already there is a distinctly different patten emerging over there so I do suspect that there may be quite a few UK forum members here who picked themselves up a bargain and are enjoying the 100mm more than is usual elsewhere.

No but I did keep the F and FA 50s together and also the M,A,K 50 variants grouped, one group being fully Af and others MF. I felt the 55 variants are sufficiently different lenses not to group them with the 50s, but all of those groupings are subjective, some will agree with them, others won't.

Peter, I'm sure that if the 60-250 was an f/2.8 with a matching TC they would fly of the shelf. Even I would buy one to compliment/replace my Sigma 70-200 EX Mk1.
