I had the shock of my life when the Pentax hood for a DA17-70 was only £9.99

The deicated hood is the same one as for the 50mm f1.4 - same angle of view as a 50mm lens on film.
The bad news is the £59.95 price tag, the good news is the quick release clip method of attachment. I haven't used screw-in hoods for a very, very long time.

£60 is certainly steep! Especially given the cost of the 35/2.4!
Have PM'd with a good alternative
I bought a metal screw on hood for the 50/1.4. Think it's a Kood and works very, very well. Definitely more substantial than the cheapy-cheap stuff.
On a similar note, I have an 18-55 hood that's missing the polariser cover! Shame that the whole hood is so expensive, and you can't get just the cover (unless anyone wants to prove me wrong! )

Thanks to all who PMd me with offers and I now have sourced a Pentax hood.

Again Matt, you could try China or Hong Kong via ebay Buy the whole hood
Yes, I'd seen those Again Matt, you could try China or Hong Kong via ebay Buy the whole hood
It's just such a shame though when the rest of the hood is perfectly fine! I'll probably just use this one without the cover...

£58 is ridiculous - that's over a third of the price of the lens!
It can't cost anything like that much to produce, or at least if it does then Pentax need to make the process rather more efficient. It surely can't be more complicated or use much more plastic than, say, the Lego minifigure magnets which sell for around £10-£20 for a pack of three.
I would like one, but I draw the line at paying £60 for it. I'll keep haunting ebay for an old hood at a sane price.

Well be that as it may, the cheap alternative is even more expensive because it's not not fit for purpose...
I shall be sticking to the Pentax variety and have indeed found one on eBay.
My original, purchased in 1985, is still used by Sue with the 50mm, so it was not expensive over the lifespan. 26 years for a cost I think of about £15 at the time.

I'm thinking of getting a hood for my 35mm - but yes the thought of almost £60 does frighten me .
When I look at the cost of the Pentax hoods I can't see why there is such a huge difference in the price of them

The JJC one was less than £20 from Amazon, and it's going straight back. If doesn't fit properly and is made of cheap plastic that looks like it won't last like my current Pentax one. That was bought in 1985 and is still going strong.
Looks like I shall have to spend £58 after all - no point having cheap alternatives that are no good. Back to my own rule - Pentax only.
