I had the 16-85mm for a while, didn't face the issue, however...
Tipping you've tried cleaning the contacts on both lens and camera?
Does it manually focus to infinity? (far objects)

Thanks Rick. I'll try cleaning the contacts when I get back home, but my 55-300 is focussing fine so I think the body is ok, a K3

That's positive news regarding the K-3 & 55-300mm, so unlikely to be the contacts, however worth a quick try of cleaning them.
Reading around other sites, it seems that the 16-85mm can have various focusing issues, from jumping around after hitting focus or failing completely due to lose screws, hope this isn't the case for your copy.

Thanks, I'll check those things, it does focus manually. I'll clean it when I'm home next week, then debate whether to take a screwdriver to it or just call it a manual focus lens

Sounds like an issue with the lens contacts or the 4 pronged contact thingy that tracks focal length and focus ring position. I'm guess the springy prongs might be bent.
They might be accessible from underneath the rubber grip.

I've also started having issues with the focus on my 16-85mm. It's fine at the widest end of the zoom but cannot quite get itself to the final focus if using the zoom, it requires a tiny bit of manual focus. My first copy never had any issue until I broke it. It's a very frustrating issue on a lens I use a lot, I think I'll have to send it for repair, or look for a good second hand copy

My copy started playing up a few days ago! It cannot focus at all when zoomed in, but can focus at the wide end. It was focussing as normal at the wide end, but I think that it now takes a few attempts to acquire focus. Such as shame as the image quality is stunning.

They're different types of motors so it won't be a motor failure. My guess is that it's an electrical contact issue.

I think this is a fairly common issue with this lens, I've read about it several times.
