Not as hip as you think .. that should be +2

Hmmm, do they use the word hip these days :

Ditto.

I mean +1

Oh I don't care anymore.

P mode with program line set to high speed might be the better option; that way you can be more sure that you can catch fast moving objects quickly (which you can't in green mode). Combine it with auto-iso (e.g. 100-400). But as you said, more experimentation called for

PS
I admire people that can put the camera back to a default setting after a bit of use. I often end up with ISO 3200 or 6400 when I grab the camera for a quick shot

Still have the K10D but my comments were levelled at using the K5 as I felt I should at least understand the various modes even if I choose not to use them

As others have said, Hyper Program mode allows you to seemlessly switch between Av, Tv and the selected program line (green button). As fatspider mentions, it is the best way to switch between modes.

My favourite mode on the Z-1 was Hyper Manual: Normal manual but a single button press would set the selected program line settings, then by pressing the AE lock, it would hold the metered EV level and allow you set the shutter/aperture settings for this with either dial... genius. I've not ventured far enough into the K-5 manual to know if this works on it too?

Many thanks to thread starter and the contributors, I have used Program mode often since I bought my K5 five months ago, without fully understanding it and its relationship with the green button.

But now, finally, I "get it", and I agree that it is exceptionally useful. I use it most of the time, along with M and B (with various drive and focus configurations).

Absolutely. I can't see the value of P if when changing your shutter speed to capture something that needs a faster/slower speed it gives you a ridiculous aperture (which it occasionally does) or vice versa when it can slow the shutter speed down so much that even with SR it introduces camera shake.

Without a doubt TAv gives you the best of most worlds and the only times I don't use it is when using P-TTL flash (in Av) or macro (MF) or MF because I know what I want and don't want any settings to change.

I've just checked the K-5 manual, and it does Hyper Manual like the Z-1 did and the AE lock works the same way.

I'm not sure about TAV, unless you know the effect you want (favouring aperture or shutter speed) in advance, I can't see how it helps. I haven't used it much and don't know how swapping lenses with different maximum apertures might affect it?

TAv mode is great. I can't see why you wouldn't know in advance what shutter or aperture appropriate when see a scene to photograph. Surely you knwio whether you want to stop down to get a large DOF or open it up to get some nice shallow DOF+bokeh effects. And with shutter whether you want to stop action or avoid camera shake, or deliberately slow the shutter for motion blur effects, etc

Even on candid street type shooting which can often be from the hip I make these type of decisions based upon the prevailing conditions and level of lighting, etc

Using TAv mode with flash isn't good though. Often the cam will choose an ISO of something like 25600 and the pic will be blown out!!

Yep ! That's why I mentioned when using flash I switch to Av.

I set the camera options to restore everything to my defaults when I turn the camera off, i.e., ISO to 200, no bracketing, no exposure compensation etc. Obviously I have to remember to set the mode back to Av if I have been using manual. There are lots of options as to what settings you want to keep and which to restore. As a result I often flick the camera off and on again as a quick way of cancelling everything.

By green mode I for one was refering to the option on the rotary mode dial.

The green button on the upper back/right of the camera is as yet another ongoing mystery which seems to do something sometimes, but not others. Does it need setting up or something?

OK, thanks guys,

I think more experimentation is called for.

I tend to leave mine on Av when I've gone out with the camera over my shoulder as it were, but on the green mode when it's packed in the top of my rucksack. That way it's generally ready for something if I have get it out quickly and the second shot can be done with a bit more thought.

I had never used the P mode with the K10D because I couldn't make head nor tail of the instructions and felt I should at least try a bit more.

Bernard.

With you on this one, could never see the point of the (P) mode on my K10, or get my head around the programme line, whatever that was.

So have never really looked at this option on my K5.

Maybe I should.

Take care.

Maybe I am missing something, but to me it seems that program mode is the best of all worlds. Depending on which dial I use I can set aperture, speed or ISO on the fly and have the camera behaving as if if it was on one of the other modes. With the added advantage that if I am shooting sports I can adjust the camera's behavior.

What is the downside?:
