Thanks for that, but no earthly use   All the reasons for NOT getting a compact - and all correct of course and I could add quite a few more. I have been down this road so many times in my head over the recent weeks and always come to the same conclusion - do not get a compact. I wa...

Digital Compact comments please

My wife has the G9 and I've used it a fair bit myself  Basically I do not like Canon (I have a Powershot Pro) but then I do not like Microsoft, Adobe PS, Sony, etc. :( Sometimes however there is no alternative except to go without. I have held a G9 in the shop environment and generally...

That's a good idea Kevin. There are some quality film compacts, but a lot of them fall short of the image quality obtainable from an SLR. How about a Rollei 35T (Tessar lens) or 35S (Sonnar lens) but you might need a clip on rangefinder to focus them accurately. The only downside is that the lens...

No 10 - Road Tax Petition

Anyone any idea what the carbon footprint of a fancy lens is? My 23 year old Land Rover has very little plastic and is repaired by replacing parts as often as not used or made from scrap not modules 90% of which won't be broken but get replaced anyway. It does 30 to the gallon diesel or sunflower...

No 10 - Road Tax Petition

Incidentally I'm no longer convinced bio fuels are a good thing seeing the way the cost of cooking oil has gone up. I can afford it but the third world can't. So I'm back on diesel. Mike Fair point. That's why I try to stick to waste vegetable oil. It was grown for food. Has been used for food an...

No 10 - Road Tax Petition

How about the latest scandal, here in the Netherlands. Civil servants from 3 Departments (Economy, Health care, and Foreign affairs) can declare their speeding tickets (paid back by their employees) as long as they don't pass the 1-10 Km margin. Now.....try to sell that as a Gov. to the people who p...

Please educate me

Your questions are really about the general basics of photography rather than the specifics of your particular camera. This is where it helps to read books, magazines and websites on photography in general. A lot of it will apply to all decent SLR cameras - which all have Av and Tv modes, for exam...

I'm up for this too, felt like making a similar post in the past along these lines, but as mentioned there are obvious security issues along the way, so good idea to make this a sticky! Obviously if someone with one post asks to play with my new expensive toys, they will probably get knocked back...

To add a slight selfish twist to this idea. How about a respected member of the forum takes a novices kit away for a few days and comes back with a few tips on what the cam likes and where the lenses are most suited.I have a feeling this could be deduced by an experienced photographer fairly quickly....

Street shots

Gee I wish I could do this. Quite apart from having the brass neck how does he compose, focus and shoot so quickly. I guess he has the focus preset and I think his Leica has a very good viewfinder attached. What I found particularly interesting is the way he gets such a low angle. Mike

I watched the Bruce Gilden in NY video a while back and probably like most of you my thoughts were along the lines of: "he only gets away with that because it's New York, if I tried that in the UK I'd get attacked by some irate yob". Then I discovered last night that he did it in Derby earlier t...

Hiya, " But I've never had any buyers that caused me SERIOUS problems. The worst that generally happens is non payment or slow payment" Pete..you have been lucky so far...some stories: 1. I sold a Contax lens (£200) to a USA buyer (an EOS user). He paid with paypal within 48 hrs. ...

If you sell on evilbay...huge changes now, so be careful..

My more serious items for sale are more occasional, and I take great care with the descriptions and the way I deal with buyers. I think one's own attitude does influence the buyer's attitude. I suspect they're less likely to mess you about if you seem fair, straightforward, honest and look like ...
