It's normal, it's so the camera knows how much shake reduction to apply. If you only have one manual lens the camera should remember the last setting so you don't need to confirm it every time you switch on, just go ahead and shoot.
gee tks for the clarification... really appreciate your advise... tks

In order for your flash to work in P-TTL mode it requires information from the lens as well as the camera, if you're using an older (manual) lens then P-TTL is unable to work; hence you need to set your flash to either manual or auto mode.
i am using the smc pentax-m 1:1.7 lens so i guess p-ttl wont work right? bur then again i have tried all mode on the flash as well as the camera but still no flash fire...

anyone got this problem as well?

You only need to enter the focal length once after fitting the lens. The camera will remember the setting.

Each time you turn on the camera subsequently, you can just half-press the shutter button instead of 'OK', if you like.
hi pls forgive me for the hijack of this thread... i have the same situation too... i remembered i did permit the aperture ring for my prime lens but everytime i turn on my camera it asl me to input the focal length... is this normal or am i missing something here? tks

Hi,
I'm interested in this, because I haven't got a new flash yet.

Which camera are you refering to when you say that your shots are under exposed?
Peter
hi i am referring to my pentax 540 flash and k20d...

The Pentax flash system does tend to underexpose, especially if the subject itself is bright or reflective. Add a bit of compensation on the flash, or exposure compensation on the camera.

To use a shutter speed higher than 1/180th, you'll need to use high speed synch. You too can use a shutter speed of 1/4000th if you want to.

If you mean your shutter doesn't fire when you use a manual lens, you need to change the custom menu setting to permit use of aperture ring.

Hope that helps.
well i have tried with my subject indoor but with outdoor background... results are totally underexpose... havent tried to increase the compensation on both the flash and camera... will it helps?

i can shoot with my manual lens so i supposed my aperture ring is permitted already but yet i cannot fire my flash still... anymore setting that i should take note of?

anyway tks for the inputs...

hi all... i would like to ask a few question regarding the 540 flash...

firstly i had a group shot with few other brands last month but mine are mostly underexposed. i am pretty sure that my flash fired according to the pentax software... standing distance are the same about 2~3 metres...

secondly i notice that the maximum shutter speed is fixed at 1/180 while other brands can go till 1/4000...

lastly when i use prime lens my flash cannot fire no matter what mode i use on the camera as well as the flash...

any ideas what the main cause beside user problem? real appreciate all the help i can get here... tks

If a very old flash has ever been attached to this camera, there is a possibility that the camera is at fault and not the flash. Is it possible for you to take both to a Pentax Dealer who would be able to test your camera with another flash, and your flash with another body?
i bought it online so i am not sure if its new or not but i presume it should be... didnt see any checkbox that says new item though...

So does your P-TTL still remain after you remove and insert it back? I am really having trouble with my flash...
The problem I had only came up once, it confused me greatly but once the flash went back to P-TTL it's stayed there since. I'd probably take Matt's advice above if I were you and get the flash replaced if it's still under warranty - sounds like some sort of electronic glitch which is unlikely to be anything you can fix yourself. Sorry!
yeah guess i will do just that... but i bought my flash from a online store and its unlikely i can send it back for replacement... not sure if they can replace at pentax dealer internationally though... best hope is at least can be repair for free...

I had the same problem once with my AF360 + K10D, couldn't figure it out at all, switched camera and flash on and off, removed batteries etc - nothing worked. Then (after many failed experiments) I tried putting the flash into SB mode and firing off a couple of shots. Hey presto! Something must have reminded the flash that the camera was P-TTL rather than TTL because the option came back into the flash menus. I have no idea why this worked but it did and I've not had the problem again since...
