The 60-250 at full zoom + K7 is less than 30cm - just - strictly speaking I think you need to remove the lens cap to comply

The hood will be a no no then.

Appreciate all the feedback

Get yourself a fast prime and never look back.

A 50/1.7 is a good cheap choice. FA43 Limited is the pinnacle.
Already have the 50/1.7
Got to say, value for money, it's fab. I use it alot. Sometimes "force" myself go out with just the nifty. Makes me think a lot about the shot. Problem is, it's often just a tad long. So the range of the 18-55 fits well.

Decision is:
Do I go for:
The 17-70 and a great range with improved quality
or
21 ltd no range but quality by the bucket load (at least wide open)
or
16-50* Hmmm - interesting
or
Sigma will take a gander

Cheers

Hi Peeps,

Understand that the 18-55 kit lens is well thought of but can't help thinking that £70 worth of lens could be improved on.

Is the 17-70 worth the £330 premium.

But...I really enjoy shooting wih my primes and was wondering about the 21 Ltd. An even bigger price hike but I will then have serious quality

I know that this will leave me open to major heartache... what next 70 Ltd, 31 Ltd but at least that way I will not feel lacking (except in the wallet :blush

OR

Sigma et al?

Want to concentrate at the wide end at the mo but the extra reach of the 17-70 is soooo enticing. But is it worth the dosh?

Thanks for the feedback.

I’m fortunate to be able to say it’s not my first trip to Thailand. We plan to take a fairly relaxed holiday this time with a bit more beach and less city. Last time I took all the kit (ex the 10-20 as that’s a more recent toy) and whilst all got used, lugging it around all the time became as pain. Hence the desire for a walkabout lens.

Looking back I used the shorter focal lengths most last time but 55 max on the kit lens would have been a bit too short to live with.

Have some thinking to do!

I suppose a K5 + smc DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM + smc DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED (IF) SDM would give me a fairly good range and not weigh too much…

Thanks so much for the replies.

DON'T HELP THOUGH

Decisions Decisions. Options Options.

Only one solution, open a bottle of wine

Will see if GF will carry a lens.

@Hardgravity - how do the Sigma 18-200 and Tanmy 18-250 compare?

No votes for the 18-135?

Would rather not buy a lens just for one trip...

Thinks :, maybe this will be an excuse for the next trip.

Hi all,
Hope you can give me some advice.
This started off in my mind as a simple task; get a superzoom to take to Thailand at the end of March. Instead of the 18-55 kit, Sigma 70-300 and nifty 50, just take the new lens (and I reckon the 50 would end up slipping in a pocket as well). Sigma 10-20 and Pentax 100 Macro would also have to stay at home. Priority is to stay light!!
So, which lens?
Looking about have identified the following initial ideas
Tamron 18-200 c£190
Pentax 18-250 c£370 (discontinued but there are a couple out there)

Both older lenses and with mixed reviews. 18-250 sounds better. Is it worth twice as much??

Then I starts thinking (usually a mistake). All the glass above plugs into my old (but trusty) K100D. Am I building up a system which, whilst not obsolete, is a tad stale? I lock the credit card up – so it doesn’t run away - and take a look at the shiny new 18-135 WR! £545 ouch.

Body will be upgraded sometime (and if it was not for the trip – maybe rather soon) so would the 18-135 be a better long term bet, with K-r / K-7 etc?

Am I making any sense?
Have I missed any options? (i.e. lug 3 lenses about and save the money for a new body and “better” glass.)

Thanks for your time.

I have an ancient Vivitar 28-200 mm macro focusing zoom lens which I was hoping to use with my shiny (well matt actually) new K100, at least until I can afford a new lens.

Unfortunately the lens won't attach to the camera. The mount info on the lens is P/K-A R-P/K
Hope this makes sense but looking at the mount end of the lens, there is the lever that protrudes out of the lens which moves when the aperture is adjusted. Towards the centre of the lens mount is a metal ring. This ring has a shoulder on it which extends a quarter of the way around the ring in a clockwise direction. On the kit lens, next to the lever there is also a shoulder but it is only half as long. There is a recess in the camera body to lake the shoulder but it is only long enough to take the short shoulder.

Is it possible to get a bayonet to bayonet adapter to enable me to use the lens? If so, should I bother?

Phew

Thanks and Regards
