Maybe it is time for an upgrade. There was a good priced k20d on here recently. It might be still for sale.
I already have other options but the DS is in good nick and has always produced good images - I quite like the 6MP images which have great colour reproduction.

When your shot was underexposed, how close to the subject were you? I gather that the ist DS would underexpose when flash was used in close up, for want of a better word, but behaved correctly with wider scenes. Just a thought

Michael
Hi Michael,

I've tried with a variety of distances and get the same issue - The flash is going off but I have a feeling that the shutter is delayed. I haven't got around to reloading the firmware yet perhaps the reset might help.

You've promoted me to dig out the spotty and do the same, I've got some 2012 colour film that needs using.

I too like the image of the couple with their bags walking in opposite directions - framed by the dark shop windows.

Hi
Would doing a factory reset solve the issue. Probably a long shot, but...

Hi Michael,
I thought about doing that but the firmware won’t download on my computer (it’s a MAC and the software expander doesn’t want to open the files - probably too old for Ricoh to support now?)

Is the flash set on trailing sync?? It could be that, but it's been that long since I've used the built in the flash that I can'tremember. It's akso been even longer since I used an IST!
The ist DS is fairly basic and doesn’t have that function. Probably not worth getting a repair due to age of the camera so I’ll just have to put up with the issue.

Anyone out there had an issue with the built-in flash not syncing with the shutter?

My old DS has developed a lag between the flash going off and the shutter releasing - photos with flash are very underexposed.

Tried to download latest firmware (currently running 2.00 and latest version is 2.02) as I thought it might reset things but the software expander won't open the file on my MACBook!

May just have to continue without the flash, hey-ho!

Thanks all for the advice and comments, I’ve just got back into birding after a break of more years than I can remember (kinda retired part time so have a bit of time to get out and about).
I started to look at getting a new camera and lens but soon realised that it would cost the price of a small hatchback to get what I wanted.
The alternative, as I already have a large collection of Pentax gear, was to invest in some second hand kit for the moment and look at new equipment later.
From the advice you’ve all given it appears I have a couple of choices but I like the suggestion of the 300mm with a converter, provided it is compatible with the K5.
Thanks again for all the suggestions and advice.

Does anyone have good advice on a suitable lens for birding - I use a K5 but may also use a LX with film occasionally.
Obviously looking at secondhand at the moment and have considered the Sigma but not sure on compatibility if I get around to upgrading to a K3iii in the not to distant future.
