No race pics, I'm afraid (although I took a few on the grid and will try to add some in due course). The day job restricts me to practice shots.

The haze played havoc with the autofocus, although it might just have been me being rubbish...

Shots taken with K-5 and Sigma 100-300mm f4 (except the Mark Webber portrait, for which a Pentax 28-105 f3.2-4.5 was pressed into service). And for anybody wondering about the curious exposure in #3, that's Kimi Räikkönen heading towards the pit straight's atmospheric pollution. Finally, science is powerless to explain #7...

Sorry, should have paid more attention in my original response. I rarely use any kind of auto setting - aperture priority for wildlife, sometimes, but with motorsport I tend to keep the camera in manual mode - including the focus, when panning. I pre-focus on a particular spot, although that has its drawbacks because drivers don't always follow the prescribed racing line.

Felipe Massa is probably the worst culprit.

Oulton Park last Saturday, Castle Combe on Monday and I'm now in Shanghai. Not a particularly quiet week, then. Here are a few snaps from Castle Combe, all taken with K-5 and Sigma 100-300mm f4 (thought it might be too dark for the 150-500)...

Sorry for the tardy response - I'm halfway to Shanghai...

Those shots were taken with a K-5 and a Sigma 150-500, but I have managed OK results with a K200D and a Tamron 18-250 (sample below).

I don't really have any tips, other than to practise, practise, practise. My default setting for pan shots is usually 1/125, although the speed of car and corner is obviously a factor. At Suzuka, F1 cars negotiate 130R at 200-odd mph and I struggle to get anything vaguely sharp below 1/200 (or even 1/250). At a second-gear corner, however, I sometimes manage acceptable snaps at 1/25 or 1/40 (although I don't keep many taken at that speed). I also have the unfair advantage of media access, which puts me on the other side of the debris fencing.

I assume the touring cars will use the Island circuit at Oulton. A pity if so, for that bypasses the Hislop Chicane - a very good spot for camera-toting spectators, with reasonable proximity and a mesh-free view. Deer Leap and Druids are pretty good in that respect, too.

Good luck!

Concur with all the above - and particularly like #12. Seeing these images really takes me back: I used to live just around the corner from the Botanical Gardens, but haven't been there for eons.

Is there still an aviary within? I recall trying to teach one of the resident parrots to tell Frank Carson jokes, although that was probably 30 years ago. I suspect beer might have been involved...
