Compliments to all for some wonderful shots. I would love to have joined you, but a Mr Springsteen had inconveniently organised a clashing fixture in Hyde Park. Next time, perhaps...

I've just returned from four days at Silverstone, where other commitments meant I was mostly restricted to taking photos during Friday's ceaseless rain. The following morning, my K-5's front wheel went on strike - a pain when you almost always rely on manual settings. Despite my fondness for taking shots of racing cars during heavy downpours, I had never experienced this before. I was also using a loaned K-7, which ploughed on regardless.

The K-5 wheel now appears to be functioning once more, so I can only assume there was some kind of moisture ingress that has since dried out. It was very wet, mind...

Thanks, John, for the topic, the verdict and the unexpectedly kind words - I felt fairly certain my entry would be squashed by a steam locomotive, buried beneath a historic edifice or else swept away on a tide of Pimm's.

I really liked several rival entries and am flattered that mine should have been selected.

Compliments to all... and trust our paths will cross again in a month or so (assuming I can remember how a tripod works).

Junior showtime

Proof that cars tend to look better in their 50s than most human counterparts. John Arnold in action at Brands Hatch on June 30 in his 1959 Elva Formula Junior. Taken in colour, but converted to mono because I like doing that when drivers don open-face helmet and goggles to race old cars.

Taken at 15.45 with Pentax K-7
Lens: Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro (if I'd used the Sigma 150-500, I'd have been forced to step back into some nettles)
1/125
f9
200 ISO
no exposure bias

Nothing to do with me, Mike. I think Darren Heath was responsible for most of the modern shots therein. When I rediscovered my interest in photography in 2008, after 24 years of not bothering, Darren very kindly gave me guidance on some of the better places to stand (or, in the case of the Monaco chicane, sit).

He also suggested I buy a C***n body, so that I could borrow lenses from the pros, but I ignored that bit...

The second shot of Kimi's sunglasses is printable and sellable (even more so if you have a version with his whole face shown).
I actually focused on his glasses, because it was tricky trying to frame his full features between all the TV crews' heads and cameras. This was as close as I got, but I prefer the other shot...

Close-ups taken with K-5 and Sigma 100-300mm f4, rest with K-7 and either Sigma 10-20 or Tamron 18-250.
