Yup, this does indeed look interesting if it's priced to fly.

One thing that's troubling me is I don't recognise the sensor specs at all from the prior product line-up. Does anybody have a positive match on this?

FWIW, I did a google for "12.4 megapixel CMOS image sensor" as per the spec and the second hit that came up was for the Nikon D2X!

Click the link that says "Source" below the purported specs.

Sounds legit to me.

I'd have thought that must call into question the long term viability of Hoya's Pentax badged DSLRs, given that they are all produced in the same factory
This alone is unlikely to change direct volume manufacturing costs much, although the overall impact may just be enough to sink Pentax.

The basic problem is that the operation is too small; whereas Pentax's global market share is skirting around margin of error territory Samsung are in fact right off the map.

This makes it unviable because the puny market share - combined or otherwise - must grow significantly to achieve anything resembling critical mass. Otherwise the business can simply not generate enough cash to be self-financing, raising the painful question why should anybody want to own it for investment purposes.

However, no doubt the Samsung partnership provided Pentax designers with significant input around the sensor which is clearly the key camera component. Separately Pentax have recently sacked a whole bunch of design staff in Japan and you have to seriously wonder what actual product development capacity remains, given the way the organisation has been butchered.

I really don't see how Hoya can take a constructive view of Pentax in light of this development. Objectively it is not just one or two problems with the company operationally but that the whole thing needs to be fixed from the ground up, from design, manufacturing, quality control to marketing.

It is a veritable management nightmare; who needs the grief?

If GX production stops then there'll still be Pentax bodies.
That remains to be seen. In any case it is important to distinguish that this is an article of faith rather than an immutable law of nature.

In particular as a former strategic partner of Pentax, Samsung are likely to have - possibly to a significant extent - co-financed the development of new Pentax dslr models.

As such it is clearly not a wild stretch of the imagination to suspect that the current dearth of new Pentax models in the aherm product line-up is due to the withdrawal of such financing, and/or the unwillingness of Hoya to pump more money into the enterprise.

It also sheds further light on the urgency of the Hoya CEO's recent plea for strategic partners.

The pressures of researching and manufacturing the new NX series camera system mean that Samsung will not be introducing a new GX digital SLR camera for the foreseeable future, according to Seung Soo Park, vice president of the strategy marketing team of Samsung's digital media business.

That is a question that a junior associate at any reputable firm of strategy consultants could have easily answered in the negative. So could likely a fair proportion of the sizeable contingent of foreign (non-Japanese) fund managers sitting on equity positions in Hoya.

As such I think the timing of this interview is the most interesting, coming as it is after Hoya along with favoured brokers have no doubt been presenting the second quarter financial results to current and prospective shareholders in the usual debrief meetings.

I believe this staged statement as a clear indication that Hoya management got their collective asses severely chewed over the continued sponsorship of what looks a black hole investment lacking any realistic opportunity for generating sustainable returns.

Hoya to seek digital camera alliance
Tue Aug 18, 2009 6:32am EDT

By Kiyoshi Takenaka and Reiji Murai

TOKYO, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Japanese high-tech glass maker Hoya Corp (7741.T) said it aims to turn its Pentax operations profitable in the year to March 2010, but that its digital camera business needs to seek alliances for survival in the long term.

Hoya acquired Pentax in 2007 for $1 billion to add endoscopes and digital cameras to its product portfolio, which includes LCD photomasks, hard disk drive components, eye glass lenses and contact lenses.

Hoya's Pentax unit posted an operating loss of 11.6 billion yen ($122.3 million) in the year ended March 31, hit by restructuring costs and a sluggish digital camera market.

"Our digital camera business is not exactly a big operation. There are naturally questions among us whether it is big enough to go it alone," Hoya Chief Executive Hiroshi Suzuki told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

I had the green line in the sensor problem as I mentioned in a previous K-7 post and it was reproducible. I sent it back to SRS for an exchange and the new one is fine. From the anecdotal evidence that I've read so far, it only seems to have happened with a few of the first batch of cameras.
In fact the translation posted above is not entirely accurate. The question translated as:

"Q: After I used video or live view for an extended period of time. . .I'll find a bright stripe in the middle of the image."

should read something along the lines of

"Q: After I used video or live view for an extended period of time. . .***the quality of pictures is not as I would normally expect***"

To me this suggests the problem is more subtle and may be more widespread than suggested by the fairly obvious green line detection rates.
