I just accidentally deleted my photos from yesterday's portraits workshop at the 100 year anniversary bash before saving them. What was I thinking? I had been experimenting this morning and decided to delete those by selecting the file on the camera; I am sure the file with the portraits was not selected but nevertheless it has gone. What an idiot. Thinking back I am sure the same thing has happened before but never before saving anything so other than deleting individual photos the system doesn't seem reliable.

I would like to add my thanks to the SRS team, a grand day out! Would they also pass on our appreciation to the President who made a special trip into rainy England and back, it’s nice to know how much the company appreciates the European market. The portrait workshop with Brett was enjoyable with everyone getting hands on experience in using the studio lighting which is not something I have tried before, and has given me a taste to experiment in.

For those who couldn’t make it there is an anniversary event at Clifton Cameras in Dursley on 7 December, they are also offering £1000 off a 645Z!

The K1/K1.II has this feature which I use for interiors shots with a mix of different light sources - flash, room lights, daylight - but I didn’t realise it is unique to Pentax. If you just rely on auto white balance the room lights can give a very yellow caste which is tricky to sort in post processing and it is definitely worth using MWB in the right circumstances.

Thanks Gareth, I often move the focus point around but I didn’t know/forgotten about the size adjustment. Cheers.

Great light on the first one, I love the way you can get arresting images from this location.

Just an update: a few years ago I posted an article summarising the consensus views about photographers using flash in museums and art galleries. At the time I was mainly focussing on the widespread view that flash destroys the colour pigments, etc, in works of art. For several years my essay had been held on the publicly-accessible parts of the University of Cambridge computing system.

The university computing service has now closed down all the personal and group web pages. I have moved my essay (and others) to:

a Wordpress URL called westevan.org

I think that most museums are now pretty relaxed about people taking photos, though there is still an understandable hostility to people using flash because of the annoyance it causes to other gallery visitors.

Fascinating article. Microstock agencies are pretty clear on their position on photographs of artworks, that is they cannot be sold without the copyright owner’s written permission and as you can imagine they can be very difficult to identify and trace. Does owning a picture confer copyright or is it still with the artist or his/her descendants? The definition of artworks is equally complex and includes just about anything produced “creatively” ranging from graffiti to stained glass windows.

Your document says that all light causes a measurable but admittedly small degradation of some pigments but the use of flash is tiny compared to museum lighting. Nevertheless I imagine over an extended period, say 200 years, it would in theory be possible to detect some impact and for most museum and art gallery exhibits we are duty bound to maintain these works in as pristine a state as possible for future generations. I for one would be happy to see a ban on flash particularly given the rapidly developing sensitivity of sensors to low light, and anyhow most handheld flashlit shots will have distracting hotspots so are of questionable value.

I can see that a few people are getting a bit fed up with the negativity, and I think that everyone has actually been very accommodating in listening to the contrary view.

The points that were raised have been raised but there's little point in just repeating the same things, so time now to rest this and move on before tempers get frayed.
Thank goodness, multiple postings from someone who cannot tell the difference between an iPhone snap and a DSLR photo is just tedious.

Problem solved: the Cactus recognised the flash so I knew there was a contact even though it wouldn't fire the flash but pushing hard on the flash locking lever got a result so a drop of WD40 on the locking mechanism seems to have done the trick. I must credit the Cactus support team who responded quickly and gave helpful advice.

Thanks Rob,
I still do a bit of photography commercially, but I'm a dispatch manager now. So I don't need three models (with different lenses).
I managed to make a reasonable living from photography and the 645 really stood out from the snappers and gave the client confidence. But it was getting a bit sketchy with summer work very scarce, plus I'm no businessman, so I decided to go for an actual wage
Well done, an income allows you to indulge your interests in spare time without worrying about the commercial aspects. That said, I would suggest keeping some professional equipment if you can as it’s always something to fall back on if the worst happens.
