After much deliberation, articles, youtube clips, digital SLR camera rating and what not sites. After just about all the technical knowledge i could manage to cram into the deepest recesses of my limited brain space and come up with a final solution.

I am buying, April 20th. A Pentax K-5!

Body only, have a couple of old lenses i can play with. Budget is £900 on this so i want to get a decent all round lens to compliment the camera best.

Would like this one - Pentax 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 SMC DA WR Lens. But that may take a while to fund so i'm looking for something a little cheaper, don't even have to be Pentax for the time being.

Any suggestions welcome

Kind regards
D

Did you decide to go for the K-5?
That's if they had the stock! I hope they did.
No K-5's in stock, dammit.

Plenty of K-X's, K-R's and, two over enthusiastic staff who wanted to sell me something else.

Nah.. Even though I still cannot get my hands on one just yet, I'll wait a while longer.

Okay, who wants to donate one for an hour or so.

Take a Look at the Canon 50D - a sublime camera (I have two and they are probably my favourite cameras)
There's no doubting Canon do make a good camera. I have used a 50 in the past and loved the actual weight of the thing, something a lot of the newer ranges now lack. The lighter composite materials used give a kind of toy feeling, and that puts me off a little.

The 60d though, none too bad. I picked up a Canon 600d and a Nikon d5100 recently and tried them both out. I couldn't believe the weight of those things, even with battery and lens attached, they were much to lightweight, almost felt as though they would just disintegrate on contact with anything tougher than household carpet. Still, I guess the loss in weight can be a good thing if your lumping one around all day long.

Out of these two though, I can only look at the Canon and think yeah, I would be happy to own that.

Looking at the K-5 on the other hand, I'm seriously thinking about selling an internal organ, well, at least untill I can get the cash together by normal means that is.

Was 'teetering' now hanging on by fingernails.

Just be aware that the K5 is a relatively new camera and, apart from the unfortunate sensor splodges, does not yet seem to have been fully sorted in the way that perhaps the K20 has. Given Pentax's present situation I wonder if it will ever be.
I'm not at all sure there's any realy evidence of this, is there? Teething troubles in new models don't last very long and the K-5 is not that new any more.
Had 2 K10s with no issues
Had 2 K20s with no issues
Had 3x Faulty K-7s
My 3rd K-5 has just had it's lens release button fall off!

Based on my own personal experience, I would have to agree with cbrog there.

Having said that, If I had the cash, I'd buy another in an instant!

Edit: PS, Where are you? I'm sure that if you had a member nearby they would let you have a quick look!
Sorry Unlocker, only just seen your edit.

I'm in Jersey.

Someone push him and end his misery
There is a strong pull towards the K-5, I have to admit, towards a Pentax again. The build, the looks, I don't think personally that there is a more attractive camera in it's range. That aside, we all want to make the right choice in the end.
I definitely have to get my grubby's on one soon and get a feel for this camera. If what I have read and seen so far are anything to go by, I am sure in my mind I will make the best choice within the next couple of months. For me the draw to the Canon was the fact I just had it placed in my hands, left to play with for a couple of days and no interruptions, I didn't want to give it back. Only wish it had been the other way around, and that I was given a K-5 to play with instead. Still, I don't own either yet. The reason I am here is to learn as much as I can from those people who do know what it's like to own a K-5.

Is it really that good.

@Simon
Absolutely, best way to do it.

I will make the trip soon and try one out for myself.

Thank you to everyone for your comments so far.

Best regards

TBH, you sound more like you've already made your decision, and are just looking for a bit of final encouragement.

@Graham
Your right of course about the 60d being a lower class than the K-5. The 'L' lenses are a costly matter also. Still an impressive camera in my humble.

Okay so i'm in the market for a new camera. I have it down to two DSLR's right now, Canon's 60d or the Pentax k-5.
I have had the chance to use the 60d for a few days, courtesy of a friend. However, i have not as yet had the chance to get my hands on a K-5. I have to be honest at this point and say, i am a Pentax fan! My first SLR was a Pentax SF7, which i still have, glad i kept the lenses too. In between then and now i have had a Nikon, various compacts etc, but my next choice has to be the right one. I suppose i could say i am taking things a little more serious now as far as photography goes.
The K-5 then, i know it's good. I also know we each have our own likes and dislikes about everything to do with why this, or that brand for example, is better than the next.
Although i do like the 60d, i also like the K-5. I like what i have read about the camera and, i have honestly read my fill. Although I can find hardly any negatives on the K-5, minus the teething problems, and the usual moans about a dedicated 'movie button', etc. I am convinced more and more that i will make the right choice when it comes to it. Remembering i have not yet tried out the K-5, not yet had the chance to grace it's real beauty. I'm hoping someone will come along here, tell me where to stick the Canon, and sell me on the idea of the K-5.

Best regards

Seeking wisdom and knowledge on the K-5.

Hoping to get to why, in a little while.

Best regards.
