Assuming you're going to occasionally want to print A3-A2, I think 10mp is about the minimum for best results. Anything over that will be fine, the pixel count is actually not that relevant. For example the K5 manages to have better IQ than previous 10, 12, and 14mp models, despite having extra megapixels. The number of megapixels isn't going to reduce IQ per se, because the increase in pixel count comes hand in hand with other technical advancements.
Dont do much printing to be honest however I can not see me needing any more than an A3.

[quote:3496ace15f="Mike-P"]I still think my K10D produced slightly sharper results than the K20D/K-7/K-5.
For me it's a trade off against being able to crop a lot more, especially when shooting aircraft/birds etc.

Mike, I wonder whether this is due solely to the change in sensor to CMOS??

Do you think the change of sensor was a step back over ?. Im sure I have read before of members prefering the old style sensor.

So all round what would you say would be the ideal number of pixels to produce the best quality photos in a digital slr. A freind of mine who does weddings and studio portraits once told me if his fuji S5 pro was a little more advanced he would not purchase another camera I think I am correct in saying the same sensor was used in the Nikon D 200.

I read a reveiw recently not a pentax reveiw, on a camera that had I think 16 mega pixels. In the reveiw the reviewer actualy thought the camera produced better photos when the camera was set to the 10 million pixel option. My question is if this is so why do we need so many more pixels and why do manufactures keep plugging the mega pixel thing. Also do memebers here use the same option to reduce pixel amounts and why please.

I have tested the K-r and I think if you are reaching this conclusion then there is probably a fault. I would keep a K-r over the K10D without any hesitation, so maybe trying another one would be a good idea?
Just rememberd this thread I recently sent the Kr for inspection to Johnsons and after re calaberation its like shooting with a new camera. Im now happy with the focus and the IQ and at last happy with my purchase.
