The picture of the stair was taken in the Vatican Museums in Rome. And yes, I am also italian, from Florence though...

I've managed to make a fool out of myself!!! That's exactly what I wanted!

I see the "enlightening" example; I have tried this with an 18-55mm wide open at 18mm and it seemed to work. This though happened a long time ago, and since I’ve bought a proper flash and got rid of the poor 18-55mm… so it was just a suggestion

Hello Everybody,
This is my first post, so i'll try not to start by making a fool out of myself..

I actually thought that the lens hood's missing part is for another purpose.
If you use the built-in-flash with a wide angle lens, and the hood, there will be a black shadow on the frame where the flash is covered by the hood. (COnsidering that its not very usual to use a flash and a hood at the same time because of their different purposes)

Anyway, if the removable part of the hood, is indeed removed, and placed on the top part of the lens, there will be no shadow in the frame, because teh flash is able to "go through" the hood and illuminate the scene almost perfectly.
