according to what I have read the scam works thus:

They convince you to come photograph their "Wedding"

They send you a cheque for well in excess of your fee, asking you to wire the remainder to a "wedding planner" or some other person involved with the "Wedding"

the bank initially clears the cheque, so you wire the money. About 2 weeks later the bank figures out the cheque was bogus but by this time the fraudsters have scarpered with several grand of your hard earned cash.

I had my first experience with a darkroom today! Yipeee!

My college has a darkroom for student use, which has been disused for a number of years. A friend of mine has been a major player in getting it up and running again and he agreed to show me the ropes. I had a great time and was able to produce some pretty good B&W prints from colour negs which was pretty cool to do.

Anyway, in his refurbishing of the room my mate came across a number of things. Some old developer and paper, some of which still seems to be ok and some doesn't, but enough works to get noobs like me started. He also found some film.

The film is 30m bulk rolls of Ilford PanF, HP5 and FP4, still sealed in their original tins. Now, as far as we can establish this film was discontinued in favour of the newer "plus" versions in 1990, making it at least 17 years old. Any ideas if it's likely to work? My Dad has a bulk loader and some cassettes somewhere so I'm inclined to try it just to see. Any tips for using/developing film this far past its sell by date?

I have purchased one of those large squeezy blower things, and that has cleared off all dust and grime from both my K10D and DL2 thus far without having to touch the sensor. I have only used it once on each camera.

the mirror is fairly solid, it would be the shutter blades which would worry me. Still if you have a decent blower you shouldn't have to go near those for the most part. Of course if you find yourself having to use a physical contact cleaning method that might be another story but a fully charged battery should be enough to hold the shutter open for several hours.

one thing to watch out for with these things in general is battery life.

It generally isn't quoted in useful units.

I have a Tatung Elio MP3 player which has an SD card slot and USB OTG capability for downloading cameras. It sounds great, but what they fail to mention is that the transfer rate is unbearably slow (~20mins to copy a 1GB card) and the battery is only good for about 2-3GB worth of transfer. Not that useful.

My Vosonic can transfer ~10 GB on a charge and does 1GB in about 5 minutes. Still not class leading, but good enough.

I have a Vosonic V2160

no playback facility but it uses standard lappy hard drives so if for some reason 40GB is not enough then it can be upgraded.

Nice little unit and a LOT cheaper and smaller than 40GB worth of fast flash.

I think it's mainly the fact that they built it themselves from bits and pieces for less than $500 and can make sugar sculptures with it that impresses me

obviously 3D printing in general is very impressive, but this one has a certain rustic charm
