Personally I have never tried it and I don't know anyone with one in Pentax mount. However, I used to frequent a more general photography forum and this lens was very well regarded by the Canikon crowd. It's supposed to be a superb example of the 28-~80 fast standard zoom.

Sorry I can't be more help.

yes, I was refering to the MKII 18-55, which is just an optical update of the MKI and priced accordingly.

Don't get me wrong, the Tamron you have is a great choice and I am somewhat tempted by one myself, it's just a completely different beast from the MKII kit lens in both price and features.

But does it have a fixed f number throughout the zoom?

The Tamron has 2.8 which is handy.

Mike
It's still a kit lens, lets be sensible here. Functionally it's exactly the same as the MKI (F3.5-5.6 IIRC?), the only differences are in optical quality.

what I found interesting was the concept of an 18-555 MKII. This implies that there has been a MKI around for a while and we just didn't notice!

#2 has a wonderful fear factor associated with it. The "OMG, a giant fly!" moment.

You really are giving me some incentive to get my Kiron up and running.

I knew someone would point out a lens I'd forgotten!!!

yes you're right.

the other one I might not bother with is the 16-45 F4, since I can't think of a particularly good reason to use it if you also have both the 18-55 MKII (smaller, lighter) and the *16-50 (faster, at least as good). That's ammusing because it's one of the ones I'm most likely to actually buy in the real world!

There are now over thirty Pentax lenses listed on the SRS website.
And as I was saying to my Dad last night, I don't think theres a single one I wouldn't buy if I won the lottery tomorrow night (unlikely since I never buy a ticket!). Every single one has a job to do, right down to the 18-55.

Yes, I'm sure you're right, John - rereading it, that interpretation makes much more sense.
yes, I meant the K100D and K110D. It seems a little off to me to produce an SLR and then a year later declare (or at least imply) that no new lenses are going to auto focus with it. Other companies have done similar things on occasion, but I never expected it of Pentax.

Umm since KAF3 is KAF2 + SDM but without the screw autofocus, doesn't this mean they are taking away a feature? So why is this "good news"?

I take the point that the KAF3 mount will make the lens cheaper, but even so, calling KAF3, and the prospect of all future Pentax lemses having KAF3, "good news" seems like "New Labour" grade spin to me.

Richard
Got to agree there, I really can't see how the KA3 mount is good news for anyone except the accountants.

Careful Pentax, the *ist series and early K series bodies aren't nearly old enough to be getting dumped on like this!

I reckon it'll come out at the above mentioned price, then as the 16-45 becomes hard to get new it'll drop to the sort of prices we were seeing for the 16-45 up until a month or two ago, ~£300.

I will be particularly interested to see how it compares to the Sigma 17-70 quality wise. As mentioned by others, it will need to be a good bit better than its rivals, but if the DA 55-300 is anything to go by then Pentax are on form at the moment.
