No, no need for that. It's because you have the camera set to D-Range Highlight Correction.

This means the minimum sensitivity is ISO200 in the normal range and ISO160 in the expanded range.

Turn that off and you will have the full range of sensitivity available again.
You're absolutely right John. I turned off the highlight correction and now have the full range. So much to learn, so little time! Thanks again for your help. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the K5 can do at 80 asa on a tripod.

Michael

John is right, it's the D-range. All Pentax DSLRs work in this way.

By the way MGTS24, the quote in your sig is from Robert Capa and goes "If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough."
Hello Jonathan-Mac, thanks for the Robert Capa reference. I have seen that quotation, and several variations on it, attributed to various people over the years. Apart from who may have said it first, I can say for myself that after 40 years of serious photography, it's the best single bit of advice I have come across: i.e., 'get closer'. So often in shoots I find myself holding back, and as a result the first so many pictures are throwaways. Part of that is the mistaken belief that a photograph of subject A has to contain all of subject A.

Cheers
Michael

Thanks for all the help. I'm away from my camera, but I believe I did have the highlight correction set to on, as I was experiencing blown highlights. So I will check that out.

Thanks for your replies. I normally shoot in Av. And in that mode, as well as M, Tv, and TAv, asa will not go below 200 unless I go into C1 customization, and then the minimum is 160, not 80.

I have had the camera since Oct 2012, and downloaded the latest firmware.

Seriously, in normal settings, it won't go below 200. I have managed to get it down to 160 in the C1 custom settings (choosing extended sensitivity), but that's it. Any hints?

Hello,

I can't set my asa any lower than 200 on my K5. What's the story, is that as low as it goes?

Thanks in advance

At the moment I'm getting 4 to 5 seconds of the hourglass just to write a high quality jpeg.
Lens correction and/or shadow/highlight correction might be on.
Thanks, I'll look at the shadow/highlight correction too. Hey, I'm Canadian as well, though been away for a long time.

Can't see why not,mod yo have latest firmware?

Lens correction will cause the writing delay as it has to perform the processing before it can write the file...
Thanks, yes I had already downloaded the latest firmware. I just tried shooting in RAW, but with the lens correction and chromatic aberration correction turned off, and that speeded things up a lot.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, it does sound like in-camera processing. But what can it be up to? I do have in-camera lens correction selected. Maybe I should turn that off and do it on the computer.

Any idea why a San Disk Extreme XC-1 64 GB wouldn't work in the K5?

Thanks

Michael
