The Miniwide is the 28mm lens, I think. The manual focus Sigma 24mm f2.8 Superwide II that I have is a fine lens.
That explains why I haven't found one on ebay!!

And I have even less hope now.
You have mail.

Sample variations aside, this also depends on the design parameters of a lens. Most 24mm lenses would actually normally be used at small apertures, so it could be that it was designed to peak around f8-f11 and be at its best where it was expected to be used.

Although no doubt there are some exceptions, relatively few 24mm images are shot at f2.
Well I can see your point here John, but TBH it didn't make a lot of sense carrying a large heavy prime with a 67mm filter size to get the benefit of the f/2 aperture when it's primary use on film (for me anyway) was landscape, where I'd prefer sharp to the edge performance. The small light and affordable Sigma had it completely beat IMHO.

Also, there was an issue of the german photo magazine "Color Foto" in 1986 in which a huge test of 24mm's was made, and the headline said "Sigma schlagt Leitz". The overall results were the best of 14 or 15 lenses tested. Sigma beat Leitz.

Hi Algi,

Do you not remember the AP cover Sigma beats Leitz? They tested all the 24mm lenses available and found the Sigma beat everything, another Dr Bell job

Personally I think the Slovenian site has either a very beat up lens, a bad copy or a duff test. I have 2, one manual focus the other AF, both excellent. There is some pronounced vignetting on film wide open and the contrast is a lttle lower than Pentax, but sharp at the edges wide open.

I've tried 3 FA*24/2's and non could match the Sigma edge sharpness until f/8, but had much higher contrast.

[quote:3496ace15f="Algerno]What exactly does "but the scan was made from a similar, if not the same design as the Leica model." mean slightly better translated.
[/quote]The optical design is similar to, but not the same as the Leica, they're using it on a Canon 1DS MkIII BTW

Sigma Ultra Wide II 24/2.8 (pravtako in C / Y bayonet)

"I know a little bit strange choice at first glance, but does have aperture and focus manually, but the scan was made from a similar, if not the same design as the Leica model. Even before the test, I could see that this lens can get very good sharpness, at least on crop camera. On the FF body is much more necessary to close the shutter for sharp corners".

Agreed a £400 lens should be designed better- I bought mine 2nd hand on here so there was a bit more value in it.

Same here and yes I can live with it @ £275 because it's a fine lens in every other respect.
