Been using istD about a year but im a bit confused about file sizes or is there a printing error in the users manual?
My sandisk and fujifilm 256 cf cards are currently giving me approx 98 frames of about 2.6mb when camera is set to large jpg ***. Manual says only about 57 files (4.5mb each) at this size and quality. I have double checked the settings and they are definately LARGE JPG/BEST(***).
The difference seems a rather large discrepency.
Is something wrong or is this normal? Ayone out there getting similar results?

Mostly been using Sigma 70-200 EX f2.8 & Sigma 17-35EX. Definate under exposure in both cases. Compensating for this is not too much of a problem (also I know how to sort it all out in photoshop later) but I am a little concerned that the metering is a bit inconsistent. Still, I shall continue to work on the problem and post further results, niggles, theories, questions and possibly curry recipes, as they occur.

I have been using the *istD since last summer and mine constantly underexposes - certainly by as much as one stop but possibly more on occasion. I am beginning to get to grips with this fact but am alarmed to hear that some users of the newer istDS model are having similar problems. However on a more positve note I have had a few cracking results from the camera so I guess its all in there somewhere. Plus - now I've started to understand what a histogram is for!

looks like a few hefty(ish) puffs of air from a hypodermic syringe has done the job. 'Clean room' lens changing from now on?!

I finally decided to go for the *istD just last week. Started shooting with it on Saturday and since have taken about 100 or so images. The latest ones show some greyish/black spots - one in particular. The marks appear regardless of lens changes so I presume the marks must be either imperfections or dirt on the sensor. Any advice on how to sort the problem?

Thanks for your reply. So basically its like upsampling? In other words if I wanted to let my 4000 scans (nominal print size @300dpi o/p 18" x 12") print at say 24" x 16", the image would have to be resampled from 4000ppi to 7200ppi.
Presumably trial and error here will show us how far we can go with this before image quality is poor.

Pentax 35mm film user here, but getting VERY close to taking the plunge with *istD. I have done a fair bit of digital imaging and printing at home by getting my 35mm slides scanned but there is something that I cant quite work out ( I have to admit I am a NOVICE and so am probably completely missing something!).

My 35mm slides are scanned at 4000dpi resulting in a digital image size of around 5425 x 3550 pixels. So if I want to print this image at a minimum output of 300 dpi I reckon this will give me a max print size of around 18" x 12". Following the same equation, surely the maximum print size (output 300dpi) from the istD largest available image (3008 x 2008 pixels) is around 10" x 6"? In which case how are we achieving larger print sizes from 6mega pix cameras?

Sorry if the answer is obvious but I am on something of a learning curve here!

Absolutely agree with JohnRiley above. Colour slide shows you exactly how good (or bad!?) your photography is (if its bad you can make pretty accurate judgements from your slide results for future reference).
Colour print quality can often be very inconsistent - and if you get some poor prints back its really difficult to evaluate results in term of exposure/saturation etc., you dont know whether to blame yourself, your camera or the lab.
Try getting a small lightbox and a 10x magnifier initially to view your slides on, try some fuji velvia (landscapes) or fuji provia 400F(action),
I dont think you will be disappointed with the results!
