Hi
Yes there is a DNG option in the camera, but not sure I fully understand what DNG files actually are. DNGs won't open in PS5. When I try it just comes up with one of those File Not Recognised or File is Unsupported boxes.

Hi.
I want to shoot in RAW and process in Photoshop CS5. Unfortunately it appears that PEF files are only recognized in PS6 and later. Are there any free or cheapish programs that I can process PEF files with that will either work in PS5 or at least can be processed and then changed to a jpeg for working in PS5. Thanks.

I'm also late to this thread. I've had a Kx for some time, and I have also had no battery issues. I had the same experience as someone (John?) posted above, in that the supplied lithium batteries lasted for ages, had a brief test with some standard Duracell AAs to find they only last for a small number of shots (to be fair the manual does say they're only really for emergencies) and then, on reading this forum, I bought a set of Eneloops and the "genuine" Eneloop charger. Since then, that's all I use. I'm frustrated that it takes 11-12 hours to do the charge, but it works for me.

The motherboard thing is a common issue with upgrading firmware, and only really goes away on a device where there can be base firmware in ROM, and a secondary set in EPROM or flash memory, and your upgrade goes into the latter. That way, if the upgrade fails part-way through, the device can detect the failure on next boot, and use the earlier but permanent version. The only trouble is, there isn't really enough room in a camera for this extra level.

One question that I might have missed someone asking or mentioning - what's the "battery type" set to in the camera menu, in setup 3?
Hi
At the moment its set at Auto Detect.

Update on the battery situation. Used the camera powered by Duracells to photograph cycles for a website. Batteries lasted about a dozen shots before battery indicator showed batteries half depleted. Turned the camera off for a minute and then back on again. Full battery green indicator comes on, so I take another half dozen or so shots again before the same thing happened. Good job I didn't use these batteries to power a firmware update!

Do you happen to know the power needed as Maplin do sell multi adapters which I feel sure would work.
Not sure but I seem to recall a mention of 8.4v the camera uses, or at least requires. If this is correct its not surprising that 4 X 1.5v batteries are inadequate, and plays into the post earlier about Pentax poor design in making the camera an AA battery camera to begin with.
If the Maplin one uses a similar type (apparently the Pentax adapter is comprised of two fake batteries that fit into the middle two battery slots in the camera), then that may work. I am conscious about the whole Tip Positive or Tip negative thing with adapters, because there is no indication on any Pentax literature I can see. If you choose the wrong setting, you will fry the motherboard.
IIRC the a/c adaptor is 6.5v/3000mA.

As for frying the motherboard...if it were that easy, I should've fried mine many times by now - every time I put the batteries in the wrong way around...

Any regulated 6-ish volt PSU will probably work, provided it can put out 2000mA or so.
As for the 2-cell size/shape adaptor for the camera end - you could probably cobble something together using those small plastic adaptors that allow AAA cells to be used in AA size slots.
Hi

I think the bit about the motherboard was meant to be a throw away comment, what I read somewhere was that if the update process was interrupted due to power shut down, then the camera was unusable afterwards, regardless of what you do to it. It would take an expensive repair by the Pentax repair center to put it right again. Not sure I would risk a cobbled together solution, unless I had a clear plan and demonstratable evidence that a particular home-made system would work. The software and the power delivery system in this camera appear to be fragile. I have some AC power adapters here at home, a couple with variable outputs. Do any of the experienced PentaxUser contributors have a tried and tested process for this?

Hi

I am very wary about using any batteries powering the camera during a firmware update. The longevity of any battery, from my experience so far with this camera, is unpredictable at best. I will screw the camera up completely if the power packs up during updating.
Hi Joats

I don't understand what you have to lose? As it is now the camera is useless to you anyway, unless you pay a lot of money to have it repaired, so why not give the firmware update a go with the Alkaline batteries? Otherwise it will sit on a shelf and you won't take any pictures with it?

Hi

What I meant was, now I appear to have it working with ordinary AA Duracells, I need to go through a period of experimentation with batteries to see what works, what works briefly, what doesn't work etc. If the camera is going to work OK on Duracells from now on then fine, I can take the chance then and update. However, my experience so far is that those batteries that appear to work OK, do so temporarily. They can show they have power, but then the battery indicator software decides after a short period of use there is not enough draw there and changes to an empty battery indicator followed by a Batter Depleted warning before shutting down. This is true of the Eneloops and the Energizers.
There are two possibilities that jump to mind. 1. The battery level indicator is faulty. 2. The battery level indicator is not faulty but somewhat sensitive. Either one will probably be remedied by a firmware upgrade. It doesn't much matter which one is true, I need to be on a footing where I can be confident that Duracell AAs will keep going long enough to power a firmware upgrade. If I am not confident, then I would rather keep going using Duracells, each set giving me a shortened window of use, until an AC adapter turns up. I am only using the camera infrequently so I can kind of manage that way.

Hi Joats

You need the correct Sanyo Eneloop Battery Charger, just go onto ebay UK and type 'Sanyo Eneloop Charger' into the search and several will come up at around the £10 price point. I have found with Eneloops that 'fast chargers' don't work so well, the Sanyo one is slow but charges the Eneloops more effectively.

Having set your camera to the 'Auto Detect' setting for batteries, is it now behaving correctly with the Eneloops? Also, if it is working fully correct with Duracell Alkalines there is no reason why you cannot carry out the latest available firmware update with the Alkaline batteries as it will not take long to complete. If you do this, please make sure you update only to the latest version that's compatible with your firmware version, even if this means doing several firmware updates in stages.

I have owned four K-x's (still have two) and none have experienced the battery issue, so maybe I've been lucky. Also, I would not recommend the later black Eneloop batteries as they do not work as well in the K-x as the white ones do. The black ones are great for flashguns though.

Please PM me if you need any advice or assistance, I can probably help you.

If those are too expensive, the recent incarnation of the Lidl Tronic chargers aren't too bad and can take larger cells too.

You'd have to wait for these to come round again in their weekly offers.
With this, if cells are heavily discharged it can show them as u/s so it can sometimes help to get them started in a normal slow charger and swap them over after a few minutes. But if the cells have truly gone bad nothing will help. Avoid leaving them completely discharged.
Thanks for this. I like the look of the Technoline.

Camera comes on with Full Green Battery level indicator .I hope you keep this up!
Hi

So do I. I waited 24 hrs from yesterday and switched the camera on again today. Came on with full green battery indicator. Lets hope this means (touch wood) that the camera is not dying. I suppose the next question is, what is the best charger available for my Eneloops? I have two sets of the white Eneloop AA batteries and have been using a standard cheap charger. Is there a recognized good quality one that will give them a bit more of a deep charge?
