Was the lab a 'pro' lab with a high volume of B+W work because another cause could be stale developer.

developing your own film smells good too, I'm now using photoshop whilst sniffing a big bowl of acetic acid

I know this sounds ludicrously simplistic but...

take a reading using the cameras meter from a gray card without any tubes attached, then take reading with tubes attached and note difference then work out the exposure increase

And would a few drams of Isle of Jura encouraged this?

Very good George, this now explains the why my 645 was damaged twice in transit. I thought it was just pathetically bad packing but now I can see that the damage and the 6 month wait was because it went from England to Scotland by camel on the route you describe!

I can almost smile about it now

Just in case anyone is interested. Staples are selling Lexmark 450 series printers for £39 - down from £149.99. I got one yesterday for £35 without box. It is a portable printer for 4x6 prints with USB flashdrive and MS MS Pro, MMC, SD and so on slots, CD reader/writer, pictbridge and bluetooth. First prints are quite impressive, it would be ideal for selling prints at a wedding reception etc.

Opened the bag of bits and discovered an extra ink cartridge so - printer cost £15!!

A similar thing has gone on for years 'protecting' European video recorder manufacturers. The solution was for Sony and chums to remove the video inputs from the cameras so that they couldn't be used as stand alone recorders.
