SD Card problem

I recently bought a couple of 2 GB Hi-speed "own brand" cards from My Memory.

On a couple of occasions when transferring images to my PC I got the error message "Incorrect Parameter Function". I manually copied the files off one by one and discovered that a couple of the pictures coldn't be copied. I tried using specilaist recovery utilities like Diskinternals Flash Recovery and mmCardRecovery, to no avail.

After the first time it happened, I reformatted the card in the camera. On both occesions it happened after I deleted some pictures off the card (while the card was still in the camera) and continued shooting.

I'm guessing that after deleting the picture the camera tried to record over the now un-allocated space, failed, and some sort of corruption crept in. Or I've got a duff card.

Anyone else come across this sort of problem, after deleting files from a card in the camera?

Are you sure the camera firmware will support 2GB cards?

If you did the firmware updates, it will support a 2 gig card, but it's worth checking that you have version 2.0 of the firmware loaded.

or 2.01 if we are talking about the DS.

To check turn the power on while pressing the MENU button.

Yes, I'm running the latest version, 2.01.

Interestingly the 2 GB card claims to support 175 pictures. On my 1 GB cards I can get 93 (or 186 on 2), so either the capacity doesn't quite work out, or the card is reserving some space for something else. So I checked in windows exploere, which claims the capacity is only 1.78 GB (1,917,517,824 bytes, so it looks like they are measuring 2 GB as two billion bytes and not 2,147,483,648 as it really is - and short changing me alotta bytes!)

I Just tried a 2G card in my K100D and under Windows Xp it reports the card capacity as 1.89Gbyte, 2,032,271,360 bytes. A 1G card gave a card size as 968Mbytes, 1,015,414,784. However I believe that Windows is notorious at getting file sizes wrong although you do loose some of the capacity as an overhead of the formating. I have also used both of these cards in a DS without problems althougth I don't tend to fill them all up. I usualy chicken out and clear them before they get full.

I have had no troubles with SD cards on either of my Pentax cameras but did have a Canon S1 IS that refused to recognise a Kingston SD card that worked fine every where else. After that I have always only bought SanDisk cards.

My gut feeling is that you have a duff SD card.

Tim, I'm sure it is THE CARD(S).

I recently purchased 2x1Gb cards from an online shop in the US and the first went bust after the first use. I lost some important family shots. The other one still works but I'm afraid to use it.

I try reformatting the bad one but it stops and won't allow me to do anything, I can't even delete the images that are on it.

Moral of the story, for me anyway, stick to name brand (like Glyn) or purchase locally.

I agree with sticking with brand names as with anything else. I have 2 1gb Sandisk Ultra 2 Plus cards (they open up to be USB compatible) that have been perfect. My son-in-law saved money and bought a "no name" 2 gb SD card for his new camera and lost almost a full card of priceless family pictures the first time he used it. The store replaced the card with a similar card but the pictures are gone and what will happen to the replacement.

The old adage of "you get what you pay for" still applies.

Here's another thing. I received 2x516 cards today. They didn't look right so I called SanDisk and guess what???? Counterfit.

Thanks for the link. It was thru reading a link like that which had made me aware that fakes exist and how to identify them.

A personal choice, but I always use Crucial.
I have built a number of PCs and always used Crucial for them and never a problem.
So it seemed a reasonable choice for Compact Flash. I know they are not the fastest cards around but they are a reasonable price, no chance of fakes (order direct) and on the one time I had a failure they replaced it without question even though it was a couple of years old.

Hi, I am a newcomer to this forum, so please excuse me if I make mistakes. I came across it whilst looking to see if any body else had had problems with SD cards from myMemory.

I bought a 1Gb card to go into my DL2 to go on holiday to Tuscany. It worked well to start with then after 270 shots or so I got a "Memory card Failure" message which coincide with my batteries going flat. I was able to view all on one of Jessops machines when I got back but it would only copy 220 to CD. I have tried all sorts of digital recovery packages noe of which work satisfactorily. Can anybody recommend a good package? I can't even format the card now.
So along with several other correspondents I have decide in future to buy 2 * 512 rather than 1Gb, and to go for named cards.

Thanks for your patience in raeding this.

Welcome to the board Howard. I don't know who My Memory are but hopefully you will be able to get a refund or an exchange from them.

I agree with you in using the smaller cards because if it goes bad its only a small card.

I tried using software to reformat the card but no way Jose, would it let me. Good luck.
