I'm too stubborn. My failing.
And don't come back with some sarky comment about how I was leaving the thread.
John best delete our personal tete a tete over the past two pages. This has gone on far far longer than it should have.

In fact, no really, explain this to me. Since my original comments weren't directed specifically at you, how would it make even vague sense for my response to your response to be directed at you. Just because you replied to my post, it doesn't change the subject matter to yourself. The subject matter is still the same as in the original post, nothing has happened to magically transform it. I can't even grasp the leap of logic this requires.
Sorry, but I'll take your advice on one thing. I'm out of here.
If you want an oxymoron, here's one. I ask you to explain yourself and then say I'm out of the thread. Job done. Seriously, I'm confounded that you could possibly take anything I said personally given that the context had nothing to do with you in the first place.
Initially it was you replying to my post to begin the 'conversation' (and it continued with each of us quoting the other's posts) not vice versa !
You're missing the point ...
Precisely
Well on one thing we agree, at least ..
Now you can compare ....

[quote:3496ace15f="MarkTaylor"]Yes your reply was a response to my post, but since you didn't specifically use the 2nd person pronoun then I shouldn't take it as being directed at me ?

Firstly please note that I said ingenuous NOT disingenuous. The first suggests naivety, the second dishonesty. A rather large difference don't you think.
There is no 'panic' where I am concerned (and research will show you that I was not concerned during any of the episodes you have listed above...
As for my response, whilst indeed it was a response to your post, it still was still a general comment made no reference to any particular individual. Notice the word 'you' doesn't appear anywhere. That was a subtle grammatical hint.
Regardless it was hint I didn't need as I didn't take it as a personal affront, as my comment clearly indicated :
As for the requests for people to 'calm down' (not that I see anyone who isn't calm - just frustrated) the answer is simple ......

Second, I suspect that 135-format is becoming highly relevant to lenses prices. Of two equally priced lenses, one APS-C only and one which can do FF too - well, other things being equal, the choice is a no-brainer if I want some future proofing. The maker of the APS-C-only lens will need to price it lower if they want my business, which might not have been the case, say, 3-5 years ago. FF may be a minority pursuit but it looks to be a growing one.

Pentax do not offer telephone support, have short warranties, few retail stockists, an inferior lens line-up, slow autofocus, poor and slower flash sync, no upgrade to FF pro cameras and add to that no visible, or stated commitment, to improvement to SDM and QC, and no support service to professional shooters.
I really can't see how telephone support is relevant; Pentax warranties are the same as anybody else in the UK (this is a UK forum); there are sufficient retail stockists, and the good ones are very good; only the most expensive lenses from Canon and Nikon are materially better at focussing than Pentax lenses; flash is not relevant to lenses, and serious flash work is done in the studio anyway, with proper equipment; 135-format is irrelevant to lens prices; QC is no worse than other manufacturers; and SDM lenses will no doubt improve as time goes on.
You're just upset that Pentax has dared to increase its prices. Frankly, I would rather Pentax made some profit, and had money to invest in R&D and increasing the product range, than that it should be a bargain-basement supplier.
And even if you personally are not a doom & gloom merchant, many others are, sadly.
G
I hope that this is viewed as a global forum - there are lots of overseas members and the forum name is Pentax User not PU UK. However whatever happens to Pentax affects all users not just those in any one region. Therefore I tend to look at things with a global perspective. It's unfortunate that in the UK warranties are short and prices high. The UK consumer really does get the short end.
Telephone support is critical to professionals (at the very least) needing instant assistance. It's a key element of a Premium Supplier. I believe Pentax USA are planning to introduce it but haven't as yet. Or at least there was a statement some time ago on a potential introduction.
I don't think this will do anything at all (it may even harm) to pad Pentax's bottom line - I still believe this is just to reduce sales so that they can switch lines to newer lenses without a major investment in new plant and production lines. At least I hope that's what it is.

At a time of recession, sales volumes tend to fall.
Smaller volumes mean unit costs rise (because economies of scale have gone out of the window).
Profits therefore fall twice over. First, because less is being sold, and second because the profit per item is lower.
Reducing prices further to stimulate sales is not practicable, because it will lead to items being sold at a loss.
So, there are two other possibilities:
One, go out of business.
Two, raise prices.
It would appear that the entire camera industry has decided to stay in business and therefore raise prices.
Perhaps they are not as stupid as Frogfish suggests.
G
That's simplistic in the extreme. You know as well as I do there are always far more factors and influences at play during a recession (or any other time) than just retail prices.
In fact the best survivors are those offering premium products or very low cost products. Those in the middle are at most risk. In fact statistics show that those increasing their marketing not reducing it, as most tend to do, have a higher chance of survival. All that said the world may be teetering on the brink of recession but camera sales certainly aren't !

Mark, you seem to have an almost religious faith that Pentax know what they are doing...
Sure, big companies make mistakes. Even so, nine out of ten mistakes don't kill them and if it's disingenuous to suggest people shouldn't be distraught about what they perceive as a bad move without even knowing the reasoning behind it, then it's just as disingenuous to suggest that this perceived error will surely be the thing that will kill them off once and for all.
Truly, every time Pentax so much as twitch a muscle, or fail to twitch a muscle for a few months, people go into panic mode and predict the end of Pentax, declare the company 'dead in the water' etc. etc. I haven't even been a Pentax user that long, the K-5 being my first Pentax, and in this time I've seen about 5 or 6 major panics break out already.
- K-5 has sensor stains. Result: Panic! the model can never succeed now, it will kill Pentax's reputation, Pentax will die a horrible death!
- K-5 has low light focus problems. Reaction: Panic! How can Pentax possibly survive this one, folks?
- The 18-135 WR gets a couple of bad reviews: Hey guys, let's Panic!
- Pentax don't release or announce a single new lens or body for several months - Panic! They're obviously dead already. Look, they've stopped breathing!
- The Q is an awful product and the worst idea ever: Panic! Pentax will surely die this time!
- The K-01 is just as horrible - Panic again!
- K-r is discontinued with no word of a replacment - Guess what?
...etc. etc. etc.
So excuse me if I'm just a little cynical about the latest panic (actually panic number 8 since the release of the K-5 - and the panics are so frequent I could well have forgotten a few) and feel perfectly justified in asking people to calm down, even if for JUST THIS ONCE! Enough with the panics already. Please! It makes what is mostly a really nice, welcoming and friendly community just a little unbearable at times.
It's not as if anybody is obliged to do what I suggest in any case, so I'm sure whoever wants to go on panicking will go right ahead and run around in ever decreasing circles until they drop dead of stress.
There is no 'panic' where I am concerned (and research will show you that I was not concerned during any of the episodes you have listed above, all companies have QC issues and the reaction is almost always over-blown) - as consumers there is absolutely nothing we can do as individuals that will have any effect (and that includes withdrawing our custom) or influence on a MNC, so there is no reason to 'panic'.
However there is every reason to be annoyed at the course Pentax are taking here. We are not talking about rises in line with inflation and since Pentax's market share is relatively stable then increased demand (as has been the case for the D800 and it's subsequent price rise) is not responsible either.
Pentax have now raised their prices to, in some cases, even exceed those of the equivalent lenses of their most direct competitors, Nikon and Canon, and have thereby positioned themselves as 'Premium Suppliers' and this is, IMHO, completely unfounded.
IMHO until they do it seems very premature to position themselves as 'Premium Suppliers' equivalent to CaNikon (irrespective of how good cameras such as the K5, 645, Kr etc. are) and to price themselves not just at but above the competition. Pentax lost that mantle many years ago and to regain it the investment, not the statement, should come first. Just my honest opinion of course.
As for the requests for people to 'calm down' (not that I see anyone who isn't calm - just frustrated) the answer is simple, if you don't like to read the comments then stay out of the thread ! There's plenty else going on in the forum but for some a discussion on this new marketing strategy is both of interest and the various opinions illuminating.

It reminds me of the various predictions of the apocolypse/armageddon/rapture etc. which crop up every few years. They never actually happen but folks go on predicting them anyway.
Whether or not my speculation is correct Ricoh/Pentax will be doing what they're doing with good reason. Just because they're not inclined to divulge their long term plans some folks seem to assume they don't have any and they're just shooting themselves in the face for the sake of it. No sane company would do such a thing, so unless somebody very senior at Pentax has actually literally lost their marbles it isn't terribly likely. I appeal for common sense to prevail and for people to stop all the doomsaying and relax!
...Rant over...
Large MNCs make horrendous mistakes too, practically the whole US Auto industry from GM to Ford nearly foundered during the global economic crisis due to compounding errors and arrogance over a number of years. History is full of large MNCs who either failed to move with the times or made suicidal errors of judgement ; Lehman Bros, Enron, Delta Airlines etc. to say nothing of those that used bankruptcy as a means to restructure and get out from under huge debts (GM, Chrysler, Texaco) and those that are heading for possible extinction this year ; Hertz, Sprint, Goodyear, CBS, RIM (Blackberry), American Airlines, TiVo ... and the list goes on.
By the same token I'm sure there were many at that time saying similar comments to yourself now re. Pentax, i.e. they know what they are doing, they have a plan etc. etc. Problem is that sometimes that plan is just plain wrong. There are plenty of camera / lens manufacturers that have gone down that road, so it's a little ingenuous to tell people not to be distraught at the thought of the company they have invested, in many cases, many thousands of dollars/GBP in potentially getting themselves into a very sticky situation.
We can do nothing but sit back and watch the outcome but don't tell people not to voice their concerns and just relax !
