While we're being contentious, it has certainly gone against the general hype that I have found the AF systems on my K-1 and K-3II cameras to be rather better than some others that are reputed to be "the bees knees". I don't use tracking, so that may or may not be something else, but for low light focusing and focusing on small foreground subjects my Pentaxes nail it every time. As regards speed, using centre point focus the speed doesn't seem any different to anything else.
So I'm not sure what particular feature I would want in a new Pentax body that I don't have already. I am interested in new lenses, but that's probably not too surprising.
as of this writing...
the Sony is used for all projects video related, and interchangeably with all stills projects.
I do use the Pentax for adventure, rain and occasional 4k time-lapse videos.
in studio I've always preferred to shoot at f8 with flash and preferred f4 zooms to faster zooms... my thinking is fast primes and slow zooms is the best bang for the buck if you want a complete system.
I can attest that the sony a7III with it's cheap nifty fifty absolutely blows away the k3 with nifty fifty for focus speed and accuracy in all lighting conditions. it actually aims for the eyes of human and animals and that system is not a gimmick, it works. The k3 is no slouch, and it does a great job, more than sufficient for most people.... I'm not sure there's any need for the increased performance of the a7iii but the performance is there... I think side by side, with less experienced photographers than you and I, your average novice is gonna see a bigger yield of keepers from every round of shots esp in burst mode... they aren't trained to to compose then shoot the way us old school photogs are....
Like Wyatt Earp said...
"Fast is good, but accurate is final"
the mirrorless system is both faster and accurate...

from a post I made in 2013:
I do think the add ons, whilst not necessarily desired by all are what's going to get Pentax to shape up on the spec comparison sheet. Once you can start doing that, people will look at the IQ and be impressed. Now I know that's back to front for most, but growing the brand means getting more people in...
Pentax is severely behind the 8 ball on video. I'm not sure if it's a lack of processing power, or a lack of focus, but the bit rates etc are nearly half of Canon straight out of the box. The K-30 doesn't have mechanical stabilisation during video. There is no focus peaking during recording. There's no attempt at autofocus during recording etc etc.
Wifi and GPS are where it's headed, so getting some of the cool stuff from Ricoh's lower point and shoot type cameras into it's Pentax DSLR's will really start to draw them in. FF would be a nice to have, but it's not as if they've exhausted what they can do with their current line up.
more dynamic range, better low light performance and a touch screen, better video (including raw video out through hdmi while recording. just gut the existing models and improve everything...
but also accessory grips that add a live second memory card, battery, wi-fi, and better sound including mic and headphone jacks.
take the k5 and k01 and add hdmi, usb3 or thunderbolt connectivity... put ALL the ports on the camera bottom with a removable rubber cover, and then bring out accessory grips... one specifically for video with tablet connectivity, one less expensive model for stills.
put all the add ons in the grips, and keep the bodies affordable...... let people build the system the way they intend to use them.
Failing to listen to it's customers THEN landed the last $15000.00 in camera and lens purchases by me to Sony this year...
You call it whining, I call it constructive criticism, becuase if the company goes under now, it's YOU'RE problem, not mine.

I disagree we’re not talking about a clock radio or insurance policy here.. we’re talking about buying into an ecosystem... you buy the cameras lenses flashes and many other accessories on the assumption that most of the money you invest in the system will be well spent when the next upgrade comes along.
Being forced to dump decades of gear for want of one feature all the other competitors include... is a betrayal actually.
You bought your K3 in 2013 ? I am surprised it has taken 6 years to realise that Pentax is a small producer.
You got no guarantee in 2013 about future product and if they bring out a new aps-c camera in 2020 you wont get a guarantee about future product either.
Cut your losses before it is too late and spare us the moans.
Don't bother condescending to me, I already switched brands.... got nothing to lose if I say something to get myself banned here... lol!
as for guarantees.... there's still people out there shooting on glass plates, and developing in chemicals....
is that really the kind of niche market Pentax is looking for?
Pentax driving long time loyal customers like me away, isn't just cutting their own sales... while bolstering their competitors sales.... its also driving away other lens makers....

I was very loyal for decades, but now feel betrayed.
Betrayed ! We are talking about consumer electronics here. If a company does not give you what you want then buy a product from someone who does.

like it or not investing in a gun company that insists on making the finest muskets in the industry long after everybody else has moved on to automatic weapons is gonna force people to switch gun makers.....
Pentax isn't just harming itself and it's loyal customers, they're bolstering sales to a juggrnaught competitor that is going to eat up market share and take more customers from Pentax....

DSLRs will never be best at video, the mirror just happens to get in the way. So the camera has to go into a mirrorless mode to do video. That's always going to be second best for that purpose.
Pentax K-70 has on sensor Phase Detection AF points, to allow for decent AF during video and live view purposes.
DSLR for video isn't a new thing, it's been around for 10 years now.

Try using a mirrorless camera as a proper TTL DSLR? It doesn't work does it? Can't be done. In that instance the mirrorless is second best.
Mirrorless and DSLRs have more in common than different. Just talking mirror/optical viewfinder vs EVF/rear screen and AF unit vs on sensor AF points. Pros and cons to each approach, but I personally don't see enough to be blindly passionate one way or another. After those differences comes all the common supporting content, such as body shape ergonomics, weather sealing, lens ecosystem, battery size, dual card slots, video capability, WiFi, IBIS and IBIS features like pixelshift and high res modes, flash support, tracking AF, raw bit depth etc, ISO noise, max shutter speed, menu system clarity, customisable buttons and wheels/dials, ongoing firmware support and feature enhancements, after sales support and ease of use etc.
Pentax's own lx system was fully modular back in the day... today it's possible to have a sensor back, choice of either an empty spacer, speed booster or mirror box, choice of EVF or pentaprism viewer and choice of lens mount on a fully modular camera...
Pentax spends all their time looking back, but fails to see where the market is going, moving forward....
the 645 system COULD have been years ahead of RED for the pro film market. if they had built ANYTHING with decent video specs they'd have gotten all the money I spent with Sony... I was very loyal for decades, but now feel betrayed.

there's no market value for used Pentax either...
basically my old pentax gear is paperweights now,
Very expensive for paperweights!
Demand has certainly risen since the release of the K-1. Some say it is the BEST DSLR available!
There are alternatives for those that want something different to a DSLR, albeit not Pentax. But for anyone wanting a DSLR the K-1 is a great choice.
Tamrons 90 macro has lost side by side shootouts to both the sony 90 and the Pentax 100 so I found a Gobe adapter DA to E adaptor to use my da lenses on the sony a7III and won't have to sell my liver for a good macro lens.... which is good news for me because my liver, not unlike my Pentax gear, is not gonna fetch much on Ebay....

Further to the above I have just watched the embarrassingly low budget 1 minute anniversary video. It stops with the K1 II in 2018!

It seems that Pentax are expecting a reaction against mirrorless as people try it out and then decide that the DSLR actually has some advantages. Then a percentage may well drift back again. We shall see how it pans out.
In the meantime, there are advantages to being a smaller company and it may make it easier for Pentax to stay profitable as a specialist in DSLR.
Ultimately I expect there will be room for both.
there's no going back now.
there's no market value for used Pentax either...
basically my old pentax gear is paperweights now, with the only upside being that my k3 can share the godox lighting I bought for the Sony, so I can still use the k3 for stills or 4k time-lapse videos on an event shoot... and my old m glass via adapter is good for video with the sony... if I need to buy a new d-slr for ANY reason in the future, it'll be a sony... even sigma has reportedly stopped making new glass for pentax.
