Thank you all for your information - I have learnt a lot from this.

Thanks Smeggy for the links - it took me ages to work out where they had put the links on Flickr for the different sizes (under the download icon on the right).

Looking at David Storm's Flickr, it does seem to be better uploading a larger file, although up until now I have seen little point in uploading something that seen at full size will show you a very small detail somewhere in the middle of the picture. But perhaps this is a reason to do exactly that.

Or perhaps it varies depending on the photo and the detail within it.

It certainly does although I believe there is an optimum size to upload. I get this problem with my bird shots a fair bit and if I don't like it I use their editing software and readjust. There online editing software is excellent by the way (for use at this stage).
How/where do I find their editing software Mr. Weather?

When you open your picture to its full size there are three icons towards the bottom right. The first one is a square with a pencil in it. If you click on that and choose enhance it goes straight to the editing software.

This has been a most interesting and enlightening thread. Unfortunately it has confirmed some of my concerns and it is a bit of "The King is in the Altogether" for those that can go back to Uncle Mac! Home truths can be painful but that's the way it looks with this area of the Pentax. The good news is that when you are taking shots not of this type most Pentax cameras are stunning and in my opinion out perform the opposition in many other regards. I don't really want to move away from Pentax and whilst I am looking to take more BIF and action wildlife shots I will probably persevere and/or buy a budget body and a mid level lens from you know who specifically for this type of shot.

I worked with a professional wildlife photographer for a day and his best advice for photographing flying birds was "If the bird is against a clear sky use as many focus points as you have, if the bird is against a background (trees, grass etc. then stick to centre point autofocus and try to stay on the bird" Obvious when you think about it but not until he told us Since that piece of advice my 'keeper' rate has increased

Sound advice and something I'd thought about. All I need now is to tell the bird not to fly high or low depending on which setting I've got

As I said before when you were asking - the K50 is a great camera but it is a pipe dream to think it will focus like the budget Canon 700D I go birding with my friend all the time and he has the 700D with a Sigma 150-500mm and he gets better shots consistently than I do with a K3 and the same lens. It doesn't mean you can't, it is just much harder. If you look in the gallery I got some good shots of Red Kites today but they are not that challenging to capture being slow flying and he still got more action shots.
Don't be discouraged though, the K50 has other benefits and you will get great shots. Check my gallery (or Blythmans's or others for encouragement)

Looks ok to me. As long as it functions well, that's the main thing.

It is inconsistent, often not finding anything in the frame to focus on, in continuous and now and again in AFS mode. After initial focus lock in c mode it will not change focus unless (back button focus)it is released and repressed. It makes a strange rumbling noise. This cannot be normal. It was better than this when new else I would have done something about it then. As you know, intermittent faults are the worst and in AFS it can be excellent.(See gallery).
I must admit I thought that the focusing speed of the DA* 300 would be comparable or better than my DAL 55-300 and I'm sure it was when new but perhaps I am mistaken.
Others get reasonable focusing with this lens and K3 e.g David Storm. Yes I know it's not as good at this as Nikon and Canon.
Anyway back to the questions,
Thank you Stu for your answer. Ironically this is the only major Pentax purchase I have made that has not been from SRS!

I think my DA*300mm may have a focus tracking issue and I would like to get it checked out. I have a couple of questions:-
1. It was purchased from Amazon and is just under 2 years old. The warranty says it is for 1 year but I vaguely remember reading it had been extended to 2 years - is that the case or just wishful thinking!
2. If it is under warranty - where should I send it for repair/service.
3. If it is not under warranty what would be the best place to send it for an economical but expert repair/service?

Advice welcome,
thanks,
Dave

Further to the above I have found that all my screw lens do track better than the DA*300 to the extent I wonder if there is a fault. I wouldn't want to mislead the OP and I might get the lens checked out.
