I'm still trying to figure the way of getting fairly sharp 400-450mm autofocus for under £800.
Sigma 400mm f5.6 Af (£225 on ebay, more for the apo version)

pentax 55-300, which is generally better regarded
Taken with DA55-300 at 300mm;

With the 2x teleconvertor added, so 600mm;

IMHO a lot depends on the quality of the convertor in use, high quality ones can give good results, but the other end of the scale might as well be used as door stops. The point made by Adqam about lens quality is bang on though, the faster the better. Although once you start getting to 400mm and beyond a support is a good idea anyway.

Yes i know what it is, I just think there is no need for it. As there could well be people with Dyscalculia on here and no one is perfect.
I did not know what it meant, I do not mind admitting that.
But is this forum really becoming a place where we have to watch every word, for fear of offending someone?
God, I hope not.
Perhaps there should be a caution to those easily offended in the T&Cs of forum use.
Hopefully it would go along the lines of;

250-600. It's max aperture is 1:5.6
Bit of an extreme example really. I think most people would be happy with something around the 400mm mark.

So, it would seem to suggest that there really isn't much of a market for long lenses amongst Pentax owners.
Try and buy a 250-600 DA* judging from the last one that sold they are only slightly less rare than 3 legged men.

Pentax could surprise us of course
Now there is a bit of wishful thinking.
I tend to agree with leytono on this, yes we have Sigma but even their support for Pentax seems to be slowly diminishing. I would love a Pentax 100-400 even if it was only f5.6, and would be prepared to pay for it.

Good sharp shots, great colour on the cat, for me no2 is much better framed, concentrates on the animal.
And the lens was?
