Is it really all that surprising given the specs of the K5?

It´s nice to see people who actually know about photography & gear giving Pentax some respect for what they do well. Usually the only users of other gear I see commenting are on DPR, and many of them are rude, ignorant or both.

I´ve seen before also that Pentax gear is often what pro or semi-pro Canon & Nikon users have at home for when they want to enjoy their photography, rather than just get paid for it.

A while back I had to sell my photography gear (all Pentax) needed a new roof and cash was short

Very kind of my daughter to let me use her Canon camera and lenses whilst finances improved a bit.

Would like to come back to Pentax, but got a lot more into wildlife photography especially birds and really do need something longer than the 300mm f/4
Its a stumbling block for me and sure it is for others too, I used Pentax film and digital cameras, but the range of lenses is making me hold back for now

A problem that I think needs addressing, big market in longer primes and zooms. Something like a 500mm f/4 or maybe a 300-500 zoom would be a real winner especially with the in body stabilisation which means they could be comparatively light

I wouldn't let lack of longer lenses put me off if I was in your shoes Leytono.... whether you're shooting Canon or Pentax, Sigma lenses look the most cost effective.

If I was serious about wildlife photography I might have pause for thought over AF performance though

At the moment we are using a Canon 400mm f5.6 and a 40D, would happily buy a K-5 if Pentax did a lens in that range or even better a 500mm f/4

Don't know how fast SDM focussing is, am I right to assume it would be roughly the same as the USM in our current lens?

Sigma currently make a 500/4.5 in Pentax fit - SRS have them in stock for just £3849.99. The Nikon 500/4 is currently available for around the £5800-mark and I'd expect any Pentax made lens of similar specification to be about the same price.

To be honest, once you get into the realms of paying that much for a lens then just pick the one you want and buy an appropriate camera to hang off the back of it from your change pile...

interesting about the purple fringeing though as on my 55-300 i now have pf with this lens on high contrast images where i did not with the K5

Betting that isn't weather sealed which would be handy to pair with the excellent proofing of a Pentax body

Still think there is a big gap in the market for long primes or zooms

Nikon do the 200-400 which is supposed to be excellent and should be for over five grand. Not so impressed with the Canon 100-400 and from what I have seen the Sigmas aren't great especially at the long end, but a lot cheaper

So come on Pentax do the 300-500 I mentioned earlier and you could clean up

For now think we will be sticking with the 400mm f5.6, bit lacking at dawn or dusk, but with goodish light or fast shutter speed its excellent for just over a grand and lightning fast AF too

Still like the look of that K-5 though
