1. Dare I say it, a bit dull? Needs better lighting to make it anything more than a record shot. Sunset? Silhouetted? Use it as a good shape.

2. Better, suits this lighting well.

3. Much better, really like this, the shallow depth of field stops it getting too cluttered, and the curving beam draws the eye through the pic. Nice!

By the way, Clarky, although this is a Western Australia site, you might be interested in this page: http://agspsrv34.agric.wa.gov.au/ento/icdb/imagelist.IDC

Click on a link, see an example of the insect. Helps if you know what to look for in the first place, but have a flick through now and again and it will probably start to make sense when you're next in the garden.

I think it's a 'Squash Bug', not an adult, but a last 'instar' (final stage before adulthood). http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_bugs/LargeSquashBug.htm

Could be wrong, but something like that (might even be a leaf footed bug).

P.S. I like the names Oz animals have. Spangled Drongo, Kurrawong, Clown Bugs, Wilted-tip-mimicking Bug, Fruit-spotting Bug.

Yes, the moth one is really nice, good lighting on that - makes it stand out from the average macro shot.

8-12 inches is about as close as I'd want to get to one of them; in fact, I don't think anyone makes a macro lens long enough that will get me taking 1:1's of wasps!

You could bring out more details from the lobster cases and bridges....
Or it might just suck out the life and 'zing' of the shot. I think that's why I don't like many HDR shots - they just lack contrast. You have to be really careful to avoid everything looking too flat.

I was searching for "72mm step down" and there aren't any in UK.
I looked for 'stepping ring 72mm', just followed the naming from Chirpy's post. Glad it was what you're after.

P.S. Clarky, of course we promise not to laugh.

EDIT: Forget that, it's from Hong Kong (and you'd probably already seen it. )
