I still struggle with the idea of PC World selling cameras (apart from webcams). In my experience they are to PCs what Jessops now are for cameras, in other words pretty clueless. I've even managed to baffle their supposedly technician staff before now!

The M 28/3.5 is fairly easy to come by, the K series version is rather trickier (took me a while to find mine). Well worth the effort though!

The 7d Autofocus is so bad it's awful. I tried taking a couple of shots on Mannerheimintie last night and it simply refused. I'm like.. "what?"... and then I switched to MF and it took the shot. It's atrocious on video, too, saying "i'm focused", I track and -bam- OoF. ARGH! I'd like consistency, please, this is important.

If the K5 is anywhere like this for quality, I'm sold on it.

Seriously annoying is the battery life with Video. Maybe 2 hours? And the shop we've rented it from won't rent us a PSU and I don't want to spend another €170 on something I don't really like.

Anyways, we'll see what happens tomorrow - I will be practicing tracking and smooth pans out in the countryside....

Oh, and it's snowing

One trick I keep meaning to try with my Dad's K7 - fit the K or M 28mm/3.5 for video. Given how close this lens focuses (car-sized objects are in focus at infinity by the time they fill the frame) I suspect it'd be a bit handy for video and it's also incredibly sharp.

We can post links to sites containing the photos, we're just not allowed to hotlink to them (which is bad manners anyway - you're using that persons bandwidth without asking).

The HSTs have been handed over to various leasing companies who in turn lease them to train operators, I'm not sure what liveries they're turning up in nowadays but none of the privatised TOCs seem to be able to come up with a design anything like as elegant as BR used to manage.

To misquote an article I read recently: The HST was intended as a stop-gap until the Advanced Passenger Train was ready. The APT was cancelled. Now, over thirty years on the same HST is a stop-gap for yet another new design which is being cancelled!

For a 1970s design they're holding up amazingly well, and I really hope that at least one set is preserved in original condition.

You have to go in to your local shops and spend real money if you want them there. They just can't compete with box shifters.
Problem is when they don't have anything you want to buy. I do have a look in Melgray every time I'm in Hereford but they very rarely have anything of interest to me. It's still worth looking as you never know what they've got.

That's a famous advert for British Rail from years ago. Didn't the HST look much better in yellow, blue and grey!

I think if you're stocking your shop with ebay bargains you'd need a full-time buyer to keep up - I know I run a search for "Pentax" and "Takumar" every morning and I still miss things.
