I don't know what this guy is. But he got into my study last night so I thought he was fair game.

As above, but 52mm tube this time, since he was a lot smaller than the bee. More difficult, closer, especially since this one was running about.

As you may have noticed, I've been having a go at a little macro work. Some of you were kind enough to comment on my first efforts, at

and

Some one suggested that capturing things in their natural habitat gave a pleasing effect, so I had a go... all comments welcome.

K10D, fill in flash (built-in), 50mm SMC-A and 31mm tube.

agian, with your dslr, you will probably be forced to use a teleconverter to get that lens on the body.
Well, it's moot now, since I've purchased the 600mm Sigma that Chris@SRS mentioned a few posts back. It's a stop slower at F8, but 100mm longer.

Watch this space for more full moon shots when I get a chance... I took these with a Sigma 400mm - it'll be interesting to compare the results...

It's all to do with the actual mount on the lens itself. On the Russian lens the M42 mount is a lot closer to rear of the lens - the Sigma has a longer space between the mount and the rear of the lens (if that makes sense!!)
Hmm. The eBay entry for this one says it's a K fit.

But the mount does look pretty small in relation to the lens.

And if it is a 105mm filter fit, that's quite a bit bigger than the Sigma which is 86 or 87 IIRC (and F8 too, ISTR, so it wouldn't be surprising if this thing is F5.6 and so bigger.

I used to sell these - one thing to be careful of with this lens is the potential fouling of the camera prism/built in flash....
That's a good point.

I should have said that I'd use it on the K10D. Not bothered about the flash for obvious reasons, but would you be able to see through the viewfinder with it on?

I've used a Sigma 600mm mirror lens on the '10 and it was fine. Does this one have a larger diameter?

The real answer seems to be use A lenses or later, let the camera body select the aperture rather than the aperture ring and all will be well.
I don't know about 'real' answer. It's certainly the only answer that doesn't involve a lot of messing about.

I've only got two pre-A lenses, SMC primes 135 F3.5 and 200mm F4. I guess I ought to think about selling them and putting the proceeds towards something newer. Shame though.

On the subject of Stop Down Metering, I've run some more tests, much like the last lot, and come to the conclusion there's no significant change with firmware 1.2.

I've put some exposures at http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/52128-post9.html if anyone's interested, but it's the same old story.

Ah.

Bums, then.

Have been told that this firmware also gives full SDM support...
Well. If SDM stands for Stop Down Metering, then regrettably, after a couple of admittedly very crude tests, this is a definition of "full support" that I've not come across before.

But I haven't done a proper test - I'll have a better look tomorrow night.
