There is an idea that a photograph should be taken as is with no manipulation.
I don't think either I or George is suggesting that.

Where does this leave the darkroom and the great photographers who made prints using every darkroom trick in the book to make sure that what was on the negative could be reproduced on the fairly limited dynamic range of the paper.
Totally fine. Note my emphasis.

Where does it leave the photographers who combined negatives, maybe just for the simple purpose of using their stock of good skies
Burn them at the stake, I say "Stock of good skies"... good grief

or maybe for more complex multiple images.
That's fine too - they can be fun and interesting in their place.

All this is creativity.
Agree. But faking it to produce something that wasn't there, no matter how clever and creative, isn't the sort of photography that George was talking about, nor the type that ultimately, I want to get good at.

Are we saying that this is all somehow "wrong" just because it can now be done on a computer?
Not at all. Combining negatives in the darkroom to put something in that wasn't there is no different from on the computer IMO, just a lot easier to do these days.

We still need the creativity to make the final image, not take it
The image is what the lens made.

The picture may be very creative, in all kinds of ways, and bear very little resemblance to the image. The trouble is, that increasingly, no one seems to care about authenticity any more.

That's my view, anyway.
And mine.

Some may have already seen this, but I thought it would be churlish not to share the unspeakable horrors contained herein with you all.

The guitar? Looks like a Gibson L series, don't know which one though.
Ooh, you've given me an idea.

I have a PRS Although it would have to be done differently...
My brother has a wonderful red-orange mahogany Ibanez (varnished only), you can see all the detail in the wood. Wish I could use that for my picture...
The Gibson SG is lovely too. The lighting would be hard, though. Sadly, I don't have one...

The problem to me is not the type of answers I get but more the way they are put across with real attitude at times. Many seem to forget this is a supposed to be a help forum which means help whether you think the question is relevant or not. If you dont like the question dont answer it, it really is that simple.
Hiya Pete Im with you all the way!! And now ill get notified when/if this thread gets a reply.
The thing is, although (a) it's not nice to be told one is immature, (b) it's very easy to react in an immature way to being told so (especially if one is), and therefore (c) George was a bit ill-advised to put it that way, nevertheless, everything George said was, in fact, true.

Pete goes at the whole photography thing like a bull in a china shop, doesn't take advice, and doesn't show any evidence, here at least, of thinking anything through.

It's much more a case of him not liking the advice he gets, rather than people not giving the help in the first place.

The way I see it, it's his attitude that puts people off giving the help.

Yes - but what does the top look like?
This is a good point, but pictures as good as this that show mostly the top are much harder to get.

So many restrictions were introduced at air displays in Western Europe
after the Ramstein tragedy in 1988 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramstein_airshow_disaster) that sadly, these days,
many of the best angles are when the aircraft are a lot further away.

High velocity subjects are extremely tough to get good images of, and this one turned out nicely.
They sure are, and it sure did.

108mm? This is the full frame? Pretty close, too. Good job. Looking forward to the rest.

Just back from Oshkosh, I will say I really, really, really want a lens to replace my FA 80-320mm that isn't as soft. Really happy with the K10D.
Still waiting to see some pictures!!!
