I think it will only be a matter of a year or two, before we see sensors and in camera processing, that will make a single click, true hdr, shot right out of the camera with tonnes of range.
while that may make for some fantastic images, some people, especially guys that have had a love affair with photography from way back before digital, will miss the look, of dark, inky figures lurking in the shadows...
It'll be an improvement though.

You can take stuff out, but you can't put it in.

Great composition. I like it very much.
So do I. There's a slight malevolence about that eye that just makes the shot.

Although it lacks the advanced features like wireless and HSS, it has Bounce, swivel and PTTL, so what more could an occasional flash user want?
I'm an occasional flash user, and I'm finding that I'm using wireless more and more as the default.

I wouldn't be without it now.

You've got me there - how is "Bridge(s)" the same as "Self Portrait", or am I being a bit dim because it's too early?
It's only a self-portrait for Dan Bridge.

Thank heavens we got a definition to go with the topic.

Well I've settled for an image of a real bridge, but with at least some lateral thinking.
Hmm. Is it photoshopped at all?

I think I am going to go for the Sigma EF-500DG, seen at Photosolution for £155, but will check EBAY first, still bugs me such a lot of dosh for a flash
Have you considered the Samsung version of the AF540?

Amazon sell it for £181, although I had to wait ages for mine.

You might want to wait till they get their pricing mistake sorted out though...

Edit: Actually, it might not be a mistake... it's one of these third parties they deal with. Chancers, fleecing the ignorant, obviously.

How about the scratch from when I used my fingernail...

... just kidding.

Which model would you recommend? They seem very expensive for a spinning brush - I mean, three or four of 'em and I could buy another camera!

I might not always switch the camera off between lens changes. Or even between SD card removals.

But so far I've disposed of my gum before leaning in there with the rocket blower

George's suggestion of the judge being able to write a hidden critique as the week goes by, which then appears once the competition is finished, seems an excellent idea.
I do agree. But just in case the dev team aren't able to code up and test that change in the next few weeks, I do recommend the off-line solution.

We don't need rocket science here - just keep notes in a Word doc. You can flick through the pics and add comments to the document as you go.

Then paste them into the judgement at the end.

I think it was Lilly who pioneered the idea (on the old forum) of writing her comments on each picture as they came in (using a WP prog.), so that at the end all she had to do was comment on the last-minute entries, declare the winners, and paste the whole thing into a message.
This was exactly how I did mine too. I'd never judged a photo competition before, and like K2L, I took on the task with some trepidation.

I found I changed my view of photos quite a lot as the entries came in, and refined the way I articulated what I thought quite a few times.

It's not an easy task, but I think it's tremendously beneficial - especially if, like me, it's an exercise that's new.

If you take the trouble, it forces you to think, and if, like me, you really are keen to learn, that kind of thinking is very helpful.

Just my thought without discriminating against newbies to photography (like myself)
For heavens sake.

Will you please stop with this ridiculous false modesty.

You've won one of the weekly competitions, so you've earned your right to judge. IIRC, you've posted a few other pictures that have been pretty good.

Do you think someone should win the 100m if they've been training for longer, even if they can't run as fast? Of course not.

Competitions do not discriminate on the grounds of experience, they discriminate on the grounds of ability, which is how it should be.

Whether you think you have the former, you clearly have the latter. So get over it and go out and take some more good pictures.

And if you win another comp, judge that too, and don't hold back so much next time. Remember, we all value hearing why people like or don't like photos, and we value what you might have to say as well.
