Once upon a time I compared it against the Pentax 100-300 and the Tamron 70-300mm non-OS and found it to be the best by a whisker, though they each had their pros and cons.

Spectacular lens, however. The 'mushrooms' photo in my portfolio was taken with an 8-16mm. The odd number of blades really makes for great starburst effects.

Both photos are jpegs straight from the camera, just cropped and given positive exposure compensation.
