Great temporary solution! And very easy to do. Thank you, Steve.

This has inspired a new question: How will the newly added length from the lens hood affect the photos considering that I will be taking close-up pictures of teeth.

Lubbyman,

Very innovative! Nice and easy as well. Was the unit pretty stable with this setup?

Steve,

I thought of the same approach but unfortunately, the lens hood is much bigger than the diameter of the ring flash. The ring flash has no chance of fitting over the lens hood

Chrism8: I actually tried the adaptor rings for the Sigma ring flash. It was a pretty large mismatch

Another thing I have noticed is that I can actually get the flash to latch onto the area that the lens hood normally attaches to. BUT, the ring flash is just a tiny bit too big so when I tilt the entire unit down, the flash falls down. So I experimented and the grip of the flash to the lens hood attachment area becomes a little stronger when I turn the flash head a bit. I am not sure how to describe it but essentially, if the normal position of the flash has the Pentax logo of the flash unit at 12 o'clock, then turning the flash unit to 11 or 1 o'clock once latched onto the lens hood attachment area improves the grip. Enough so that I can actually tilt the entire unit down without the flash falling. However, it is still not super stable and since I am planning on using this in the dental setting, it would be quite the event if I do this and the ring flash does fall as it would end up landing on the patients face

At this point, I would not even mind buying the same flash again as long as it comes with the damn ring adaptors! The gentleman from the Japanese marketplace that I purchased this unit from is willing to take it back but I am still holding out for hope. if anyone wants to sell the whole unit, let me know!

Any ideas as to how I can potentially improve the grip even further? I have tried using elastic bands on the internal surface to try to improve the grip and even toyed with the idea of building up the lens hood attachment area with light-cured acrylic but I know that I will end up making the situation worse.

Thank you everyone for the photos.

Does anyone have either the bulky adaptor or the adaptors that screw into the filter threads?

I am in desperation mode at this point

If all else fails and you have to turn to SRB for help, this is an image of the adaptor Comment Image
taken on my tablet

As you can see, there is a lip at the front 2mm high. The groove between the lip and the rest of the body is 3mm. The depth of the whole unit is 8mm excluding the filter thread

Hopefully, this will help.

Michael
Thank you, Michael. This helps. The other piece of information that I have not been able to find and one that I would certainly need is the diameter of the adaptor. I have tried to measure the diameter of the ring flash connection but I do not have an accurate method of doing so. Any thoughts?

Hi,

I am not home until the w/e but I think I have a spare one ( as I had a flash system fail and they sent me a replacement asking only that I return the flash body/unit.

I’ll check and let you know either way

Any luck Daron?

Wow, thank you everyone for the replies. It is amazing to come across such a great community.

It is true that the tube-like macro adapter will also work, but I figured this is even more of a rarity.

Worst case scenario, I will give SRB a try although I could not find the dimensions anywhere. The manual omits this information as well.

Chris, thank you for contacting the rep, I appreciate that.

Finger crossed Daron will have the part

Unfortunately, that would be far too technical of a task for me

Hello all!

I recently purchased the AF160FC ring flash to compliment my Pentax 100mm f/2.8 macro lens for use in a dental setting. However, since the ring flash is extremely hard to find, I purchased it from the Japanese marketplace. Once it arrived, it realized that it was missing the adaptor rings that normally accompany the product. The 100mm macro lens has 49mm filter threads and so I would need the 49mm adaptor that originally comes with the AF160FC. Problem is, it has been extremely difficult to find one and I do not think there are any other products on the market that can replicate these particular adaptor rings.

I did a thorough search on here as well and I know some users are in possession of this flash system so I thought it would be a good idea to reach out to the community and see If I can purchase this adaptor. Realistically, any of the adaptors that come with the ring flash would work if I buy an additional step-up adaptor but the 49mm one would be perfect. Beggars can't be choosers!

Willing to pay good money for it!

Thank you!
