AF160FC Ring Flash: In need of adaptor!

Hello all!

I recently purchased the AF160FC ring flash to compliment my Pentax 100mm f/2.8 macro lens for use in a dental setting. However, since the ring flash is extremely hard to find, I purchased it from the Japanese marketplace. Once it arrived, it realized that it was missing the adaptor rings that normally accompany the product. The 100mm macro lens has 49mm filter threads and so I would need the 49mm adaptor that originally comes with the AF160FC. Problem is, it has been extremely difficult to find one and I do not think there are any other products on the market that can replicate these particular adaptor rings.

I did a thorough search on here as well and I know some users are in possession of this flash system so I thought it would be a good idea to reach out to the community and see If I can purchase this adaptor. Realistically, any of the adaptors that come with the ring flash would work if I buy an additional step-up adaptor but the 49mm one would be perfect. Beggars can't be choosers!

Willing to pay good money for it!

Thank you!

If you can work out the dimensions you may be able to fashion your own using a 49mm filter and some plastic. A 3d printer might help too.

Unfortunately, that would be far too technical of a task for me

Now that's what I call customer service!

If Chris can't come up with a replacement, the dimensions would be useful. A precision engineering company should be able to make one from aluminium. Worth trying SRB Griturn who make and sell a lot of adapters and other photographic things. Their photographic equipment webshop is https://www.srb-photographic.co.uk/, their company website is https://www.srb-griturn.co.uk/ .

Worth noting that the ring flash not only comes with a set of screw-in adapters but also a tube-like macro adapter which the manual says is "for D-FA macro lens" (presumably the D-FA 100mm macro, although it isn't specific). This one attaches to the bayonet fitting usually used to attach the lens hood, not the screw thread used by the others.

Good luck.

I've just had a reply - it's classed as a spare part with the reference 65869Y353.

They are saying its out of stock and I've asked if / when they will receive any more (as it's discontinued I would guess not sadly)

It's annoying as we had a complete AF160 in the other day which sold within a couple of days so I could have physically looked at the rings to see if an alternative could have been sourced!

Of course, if we get another one in used I can do this.....

That is a very good point - is this the part required?

The AF-160 to D-FA 100mm Macro lens adapter does not attach to the 49mm filter thread, it attaches in the same way as the lens hood.

I don’t know if SRB Photographic can help, they have all sorts of adaptors etc. and I recall the MD at the Photography Show telling me they make bespoke stuff in their workshop.

Hi,

I am not home until the w/e but I think I have a spare one ( as I had a flash system fail and they sent me a replacement asking only that I return the flash body/unit.

I’ll check and let you know either way

Wow, thank you everyone for the replies. It is amazing to come across such a great community.

It is true that the tube-like macro adapter will also work, but I figured this is even more of a rarity.

Worst case scenario, I will give SRB a try although I could not find the dimensions anywhere. The manual omits this information as well.

Chris, thank you for contacting the rep, I appreciate that.

Finger crossed Daron will have the part

If all else fails and you have to turn to SRB for help, this is an image of the adaptor
taken on my tablet

As you can see, there is a lip at the front 2mm high. The groove between the lip and the rest of the body is 3mm. The depth of the whole unit is 8mm excluding the filter thread

Hopefully this will help.

Thank you, Michael. This helps. The other piece of information that I have not been able to find and one that I would certainly need is the diameter of the adaptor. I have tried to measure the diameter of the ring flash connection but I do not have an accurate method of doing so. Any thoughts?
