Somewhat off topic but... does anyone know if the metering improves if one uses a katzeye screen? I have been considering one for a while now. I know that it can mess up the spot metering but I rarely use that anyway.

Thanks, Kris.
You should try the one I have.
Many happy campers with it, only downside is that it doesn't keep it's brightness in poorly lit conditions unlike Katzeye.
Anyway, I've read that katzeye definitely doesn't make the metering worse and the CW metering should work OK

One of the shops on Tottenham Court Road has quite a bit of second hand gear but mostly twice as much as one can get it on ebay. Ebay may not be a source of stunning bargains any more but at least the market can find its own level. The shop in St Albans has much more reasonable prices for its second hand gear.

K.
The one I was in is bit further up on the road in Camden. Incredible prices, bad thing is though, that the guy has in stock just about anything you can think of...
There are actually two shops on TCR with used stuff, Kingsley is selling it all on comission and that's why their prices are higher, but you still can get some good deals there. I find that SRS in watford has the best prices in London (most of the time) and very good team to deal with. Does the shop in St. Albans have web page? If so could you provide me link? Thanks

Thank you Tim,
Unfortunately those chairs must be there otherwise I'd have to cut the organ or the window... oh well.
Thanks for comment anyway

thanks Mike,

I know that page very well, I've been member there for 3 years
I've read those reviews, but as I mentioned it's really hard to dig any other info on this lens. I'm trying to decide between this one and FA20/2.8.
I want to keep my K24 and I'm leaning towards K18 but kind of can't decide...

Hi,

I'm really interested in this lens. I missed one here in UK for £349 in good condition. I'm thinking of getting one from states and selling my 10-20.
Does anybody have an experience with this lens?
I found few reviews, which seem to be positive, but it's hard to dig out any data on this beauty (or the beast? )

Thanks Peter

Actually the reviews said the very opposite. Being the DA*, the same optically as the FA* of the older generation, both these 200 score higher on MTF charts ...

(Will look for some data and try to post it later!)
yes, the 200 are indeed the same (FA* & DA* that is) optically. And the 300 is new design. But consensus on another forum is that 300 is one terrific lens. MTF is not all that matters. Having said that 200 is excellent too but apparently is much more prone to PF in high contrast situations then the 300.

I also suspect that M42 lenses go for higher prices due to the fact that adapters exist to use them on pretty much every DSLR out there!

Still looking for an SMC Tak 55mm f1.8 to go with my ES II, but not particularly hard as I object to paying £30+ for a lens to use on a camera I only paid £10 for...
...snip....
heh, good one.
I suppose it's going to be hard to find one under £30. In London they go usually for around £40-45. I was in one shop where guy was trying to sell me K55/1.8 for £120 and considered it great deal on my part. I just walked out and week later got one from Ireland in great condition for £59 shipped

Slightly bizarre metering is a well-known downside of using pre-A series glass on the K10/K20 (and I am guessing the K7?). I use the green button to get a rough idea and then adjust the exposure according to the histogram. Not much use for anything that moves, I know, but works well for static subjects.

I've never really understood why this cannot be sorted out or why we cannot have a non-"crippled" mount apart from the cost (which I doubt would really add much to the overall cost --- after all they have had a non-crippled version for 30 years!). All this faffing about "enabling use of aperture ring" in the menu and pushing green buttons when my LX/ME Super could do all that quite happily thank you very much (and get it right).

I suppose I should just be glad I can use my old glass and that Pentax didn't just abandon the K mount for something else entirely.

Cheers, K.
As fas as I know, it's all caused by focusing screen. The original screen coming with Kx0D series is just plain bad for pre A lenses. It overexposes on wide f stops, gets it just about right around f4-5.6 and then starts underexposing. Apparently K7 fares better but still not as good as *istD. Many users noted that if one uses modified screen from *istD in K10/20D the metering improves drastically. I swapped my stock screen for K3 screen (Nikon made cut to size) from focusingscreen.com and I find the metering much more reliable even on any f stop.

nice POV and framing, but I'd love to see it in B&W
but that's just maybe because I generally like B&W

bit over the top to my taste, but good efforts.
I think the last two are the best of the bunch
