You can't apply the same rule of thumb to everybody as you get older you need to use a faster speed 20 years ago I used to regularly use 1/8th second with 6x6 on weddings (candlelight. church interiors etc. ) nowdays I don't think I could go below /100th although I haven't noticed much shake recently on 400mm and 500mm lenses at 1/200th plus SR ON.

Speaking of rules of thumb, there were a couple of birds in the garden half an hour ago relaxing in the sun, so I grabbed the K-5 set it to 200ISO and fired off a few shots on aperture priority..... I can't believe I've overexposed them in bright sunlight 1/250th f/9 With the K20D I would have just manually set 1/400th f/9 and it would have been spot on That's brought about by using different ISO's with the K-5. I've got them as DNG's so they will pull back

Precisely! and how many people do you come across who can't MF without a split image screen or use a meter properly Even the people testing cameras in magazines can't meter correctly

Alan, I like the Sigma SR, but it hides my bad technique
I'll never be able to hold a 500mm lens without it..... It's like learning to ride a bike using a 4 wheeler.... you'd never be able to ride a 2 wheeler

I used to notice problems with SR on wide lenses 10-20mm, 12-24mm etc. so stopped using it on WA. Never noticed any problems with tele's though.

On the Sigma lenses you actually see through the viewfinder when it's settled.

Built in lens SR is not really a very good idea. For a beginner they will never even try to hold a lens steady and for the more advanced user they will eventually slip into poor holding technique

Sparrows live in groups and the male ones with the most markings on their chests are the ones in charge, so they have sergeants, corporals, lance corporals right down to ones with hardly any markings who are the privates and get told what to do by all the ones above them
