Why?

Why? because I would have thought among the members there would have been a significant number who would use ND filters and polarisers, if nothing else, for all the usual reasons, rather than resort to digital fixing via software which does not always work anyway.
But maybe I'm old fashioned and, If I offended you George, my apologies.
Terry, yes stupid mistake, I should have put that choice in and now I can't edit it.

I was wondering to my self to day if there is still a useful place for colour filters in this digital world that most of us now occupy?
I can see the need and indeed use ND Grad filters to help alleviate the "blown sky problem" and to accentuate the sky effect and I can see the use for sunset graduated filters and others of that ilk,as well as the special effect Cokin filters like soft focus etc etc.
But, what of the full colour filters is there a use for them, given that the sofware of choice will when converting to B/W offer r.g.b. alteration?
Discuss.

I thought the discussing went about the DAl 55-300mm?

I can see that what I quoted might cause confusing, was offering a pentax alternative to the quote for the 55-300 not the 18-55.
Stefan, you are correct the RBG-58 is for the 55-300DA [or DAL] and the RBH-58 is for the DA55 prime lens. It is reported else where that both hoods fit either lens the H version is shorter but does not cause vignette effect, From SRS they are £41.99 for the G and £25.99 for the H version.
A bit pricy I feel for a plastic tube.
Matt[dangermouse] I have looked on Ebay but I don't find either of these only screw in thread ones, not the bayonet fitting. There are lots for the 18-55 but not for the 55-300

The plastic mount seems OK on lenses going back many years, but I know what you mean. You could sell the Sigma on ebay and buy a lenshood for the Pentax. It is a better lens, even in its cut down version.
Thanks John,
there is no doubt its a better lens,I have no idea what the sigma is worth it came with a green lens/ camera bag with sigma on it, all in the box together. The lens hood seems to be a problem I cant find them for sale , lots of threads about with the same question. It seems odd to sell A lens even as a kit lens without a hood.

well I went yesterday and bought my Tamron 10-22 tried it out in the shop and out side in the street, looked at 100% at the edges on my netbook and all looks well so I took it. They also had a 55-300 DAL for £180 which I took on a return if not convinced deal.
I have to say that it is at 100/200/300mm sharper by far on the edges and slightly sharper in the centre at 300MM than my old 28-300 FA sigma.
but I have a really quandary now as to whether to keep it or not.
of course it has plastic mountand no lens hood as it was a unwanted kit lens, and the thread sizes are smaller than the Sigma so to use the filters I need a step down ring as well so I don't know, the plastic mount worries me I have to say

well thanks every one for the comments and suggestions, I find that when I print on the image no matter which laptop it comes from the blue bells are a shade of purple rather than blue and it now turns out that the shade of blue on either laptop depends a bit on the software used to view the image.I have also found that images of a Vanda Orchid also with blue/ purple flowers has the same effect, its just that colour hue and i have to live with it.
thanks

It's not not fair, I did not unsubscribe, so I have had five pages to catch up,anyway, not with standing oil spills and children in trouble,[how come the parents always walk away unscathed and never ever seem to be at fault ??]

Whoo went to pick up a Tammy 10- 24 and the shop chucked in 55-300 for sub £180 seemed like a good deal,so I took it. way sharper than my Sigma 28-300 at the top end,of course the filter threads are all different so now I have to buy step down/ step ups but its all fun and now I can have fun trying out the two new glasses
Magic meal out tonight, we had a waiter who actually poured the wine before the glasses were empty, plus the food was exceptionally good,
out,

I have two laptops one on vista and one on XP both have the same photoshop installed, both have the same Epson 2880 printer drivers installed. both have the same profiles installed for printing. I have both of them screen calibrated so with the same image they both look nearly the same, if I print from either one using identical print settings the prints are almost identical, except:--
for blue bells!!!
on one the Epson print preview shows the flowers blue and one the other purple.Yet the rest of the image grass trees etc are almost the same, and this is what gets printed, both have nearly the same tones and hues for the greens, browns etc but not the flowers????
oh and any image with blue sky prints out the same [correctly ] from either laptop!!
why blue bells only ?? it's driving me mad.
