I recognise the need to calibrate my monitor but also rcognise that I am an amateur with fairly basic needs and computer equipment. I spent quite some time talking to one of the guys in Calumet in Wardour Street who was extremely knowledgeable about calibration and monitor profiles. He had lost count of the number of times he'd been out to professional clients who had mucked up their profiles by using calibration software that was beyond their capabilities to use. In most cases, the default gamma and colour temp was all that was needed and the extra choice that came with more expensive software often served only to increase the chance of messing up.

He recommended getting the Spyder2express and just running it with all the default settings. Often, this was easily accurate enough for most uses which are, ultimately, to calibrate your monitor to a known standard.

I bought the Spyder2express on this recommendation, ran it under Windows and transferred the .icm profile to my Linux system. It's a definite improvement. Should I have got the pro software? Maybe but my chances of messing up would have probably increased exponentially. Ultimately, I'm happy with the express version because it does exactly what I wanted and was only £60.

I know there are one or two Linux users on this forum so I thought it might be useful to mention that Lightcrafts have released a free to use beta version of their Lightzone 3.3 RAW converter/image editor for Linux. At the moment, the beta is time limited until the end of January and there seems no clear indication about whether it will ever see a stable release. Nor is there any indication of pricing. This is a screenshot of it running on my Klikit Linux system:




It seems to run quite well, although it is a bit of a resource hog. It's a significant improvement on their last foray into Linux territory though. The download can be had from here:

Thanks for setting such an interesting, and well judged, competition. I must say, though, that when I saw McBrian's absolutely stunning shot, right at the start of the competition, I thought it would be almost impossible to beat and such it proved to be. I'm really pleased with my 'commended' amongst such a strong field and am looking forward to the next competition.

What version of ufraw do you have installed (it should tell you in the 'ufraw options' 'about' tab)? I've got my eeepc open here as I'm typing and I've just opened up a K10D PEF raw file OK. The first thing you need to know is that the version in the Xandros repositories is quite an old one, version 0.10, and will not, from my experience, decode a K10D PEF file. It will do for the iST DS and the like but not the K10D or, presumably, the K20D either. In order to make it work, you're going to have to compile it from source code and the version you want is the 0.13 version obtained from the Ufraw website at http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html Do not bother with the .deb file you can get there; that's an old one again.

As I mentioned in my previous post, if you download the source code for version 0.13, use the instructions on the eeeuser wiki, you should be OK. But check the version you have installed and see that it's not 0.10.

My eeepc came in last week, a week or two late, and I have been playing around with (or should I say configuring ) it over the weekend.

First impressions are really positive. It's an absolutely perfect size for a portable computer and ideal for stuffing in the pocket of a rucksack. Keyboard and screen are adequate for the job intended; in fact, I'm typing this on my eeepc now (wouldn't want to type out War and Peace though!)

I installed the Gimp and Ufraw just now following the instructions found at: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:addrawphotoediting . Both installed fine although the Ufraw instructions could have done with emphasising that you need to install the development tools with the command
Once done, Ufraw compiled and installed perfectly and I can now open K10D .pef files in the Gimp via the Ufraw plugin. If you are still having problems installing Ufraw, drop me a line and I'll see if I can help.

Glad you got it working. I was in Tottenham Court Road today and saw a few shops demonstrating these little machines and they were creating quite a buzz. Most people don't know, or seem to care, that it runs under Linux. They just saw a hugely useful little device that does pretty much all that most people would ever want from a portable computer. It looked so good that I placed an order but was told that all the stock has been selling as soon as it comes in. Mine should be in by Wednesday.

I've had a bit of a root (pun intended!) around and found this webpage which lists a few tips specifically for the EEE PC http://tinyurl.com/3c4ok6

Essentially, you need to get root access with a 'sudo bash' command from a console and then edit the file from within the nano text editor by typing 'nano /etc/apt/sources.list'. Because you've done this with root access, the changes should stick. That's the theory, anyway.
