How would I know if I've destroyed the camera ? I'm thinking maybe a new battery will do the trick ?

Hi
We have 2 Kodac digital cameras one quite old and one current plus a Pentax Optio E85.
None of these have charger leads with them, so I have bought a multicharger and have some other charge leads from various other things.
Basically I'm trying to charge through the DC port, I've got the - C + thing correct I think but literally there isn't any lights coming on the cameras when I plug them in (and turn them off to charge). I am setting the charger to 5v.
any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Certainly the 2 most recent have never been charged before, I've read on them about using the wrong charger or wrong Volts which I think I did for the Pentax while trying different things out.
It got a little hot.
Any help would be great thanks.
