WTF?

by stephanbennett

I just found this strange creature walking across my living room floor. It is about 3.5cm long. Does anybody know what it is? Is there likely to be more? My kids refuse to go to bed because they are scared of it.

Thanks Maria.

Is it common to Ireland, do you know? I've never seen one like this before?

Charlotte is the most knowledgeable about insects! we have them here, i usually see them in the garden though, so i would tell your kids that it just got in from outside and there won't be anymore (hopefully), not the prettiest are they?

Thanks again Maria.
It is pretty creepy looking. My girls have me turning the house upside down and inside out before they are fully assured that there are no more.
Cheers for the advice.

That is a scary looking dude

I'm no expert but I reckon that Maria is probably correct with the centipede option

It may look scary but it would be no match for the bottom of your daughters slippers

It most certainly is a centipede, very common throughout Britain and I assume Ireland too.
Harmless, it has jaws with which it preys on insects.
In hot countries there are much bigger ones which have a seriously venomous bite but ours is too small to do you any harm.
